Games modeled after the Dark Souls formula are among some of my favorite masochistic punishments. From the trial and error design to gradual mastery of the player's toolsets, there isn't a genre that I punish myself with (and still enjoy) as much as a good Soulslike. While I've been following Cold Symmetry's work since it was first unveiled as Dungeonhaven, the concept of Mortal Shell was quite intriguing: rather than creating your own character, you step into uninhabited shells of former warriors and control them in battle. It's a unique concept for a Soulslike and I was glad to finally get my hands-on with the title, courtesy of a preview build on the Epic Games Store.
Much like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, players are given two incarnations to live through before they're truly defeated and brought back to their last checkpoint, dropping their current stash of tar (Mortal Shell's form of currency/experience) where they last stood. Upon taking enough damage to incapacitate the player for the first time, they're forcibly thrust out of the shell they're currently inhabiting with only a sliver of life and forced to evade whatever enemies put them in such a mortal dilemma and recover their body before death strikes a second time. I'm guilty of using the shell ejection and recovery just to get a full bar of health, as healing items are few and far between in Mortal Shell, but it most definitely isn't the ideal way to play. Death comes quickly in Mortal Shell and taking only a few hits is enough to sever your tether to this mortal coil.
Mortal Shell is undoubtedly one of the prettiest Soulslikes that hasn't been touched upon by Hidetaka Miyazaki himself. From a team of only fifteen, Cold Symmetry already has a firm grasp on the world they're designing and how to make it look its best on PC. In addition to this, Mortal Shell also natively supports higher framerates and my RTX 2070 SUPER was able to put out a constant 144 FPS in Full HD. While Mortal Shell will be making its way to current-gen consoles, the developers haven't completely ruled out a next-gen version to come.
Nailing that perfect balance between impact and effect is a very tricky aspect to get right in any hardcore action title. If your attacks don't have enough weight, they'll feel like you're just smacking the enemy with a cardboard tube; veer too much into the weighty territory and the action will feel like it's being smothered in tar and molasses. Mortal Shell does a fine attempt at trying to toe the line with the fundamentals of combat, although I did still find some lapses in the fluidity of combat. It can be all too simple to try and mash out another quick attack on the right bumper then attempt to switch to a defensive move, whether it's the dodge roll or parry/riposte, only to get smacked in the face by the enemy.
Mortal Shell's hardening mechanic is what sets it apart from any other Soulslike I've played before. As the de facto defensive move in a shell's arsenal, knowing when and how long to stiffen up and brace for impact is a crucial step in combat. By tapping and holding the button to harden your shell (L2 or left trigger, the same as the standard blocking button in Dark Souls), you'll assume a defensive position in the middle of whatever action you were taking and either absorb or deflect the blow that's coming at you. Because the hardening takes place in the middle of whatever you were doing, weaving this action in can lead to some very interesting attack patterns. Say you want to hit an enemy with your combo ender but they're just out of reach. You can swing at the air for the first two hits, harden and wait for the enemy to approach into range, then release the button to finish your combo with the final hit. This momentary bit of super armor doesn't last forever and lasts for either a set amount of time or a specific amount of damage. Afterwards, it needs to be refreshed with a skill cooldown that takes time to recharge.
From the narrow slice I've been sampled of Mortal Shell, the developers seem to be taking the Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice approach to character progression. Nowhere could character stats or a proper experience pool be found, nor did attacks show any numerical points of damage to either the player or enemy. Instead, the focus for Mortal Shell seems to be on two simple tenets: improving the player's weapon and investing currencies into developing skills (tar and glimpses being the two forms of currency so far). The two weapons in the preview build could each be upgraded with a specific form of acid to increase its strength while there were specific items that could be used to imbue the weapon with a more powerful Resolve attack; the hallowed sword had a special ability to extend a spike from the hilt and attack with it for massive damage.
At the same time, the tarnished seal that the player carries to aid with parrying oncoming attacks could be enhanced to give additional healing on empowered ripostes or gain more resolve through combat (though I couldn't find the necessary materials during my demo). For character progression, the tar and glimpses acquired can be invested into specific skills for each of the two available shells that augment their core abilities in new and interesting ways. Beyond this, there were no upgrades to the player's health, stamina, resolve pips, or other numerical upgrades that even other titles such as Sekiro offered.
With four shells hinted at during the preview of Mortal Shell and only a small number of weapons to upgrade, I could see Cold Symmetry wanting to hone down the focus of progression into a smaller number of archetypes and builds while still retaining some unique identity. Sekiro was a phenomenal action game but beyond the shinobi tools that could be equipped, each player had a similar experience throughout the campaign, unlike the dozens of weapons in a typical Souls game or even Bloodborne. There's still enough differentiating factors between the shells and weapons that I could see two players developing wildly differing play styles throughout the adventure. Strangely, the only time you can swap between shells and weapon styles is by finding them in the world and approaching them. The crypt that served as the hub leading to the preview's first and only boss fight thankfully held everything you needed to switch and upgrade your shell in one location.
While my time with Mortal Shell was limited to little more than a standard E3 appointment, it has already cemented itself as one of the few Soulslikes coming out this year that I'm genuinely interested in keeping up on. Only time will tell if the developers can flesh out a fully crafted world that holds up to the test and erosion of time.
Mortal Shell is slated to release sometime in 2021 across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC with pre-order listings for both Steam and Epic Games Store.
The rumored Resident Evil 4 remake is going to feature a story that will expand the original's in some intriguing ways.
Dusk Golem, who has proved to possess insider information regarding the Resident Evil series, recently revealed on his Twitter profile that the development team is focusing on expanding the story by further developing elements that have been introduced in the original.
(2/3) announcement, I keep saying this but I'll repeat myself, RE4 Remake leaked too soon even if with RE8 I think some would get suspicious), but yes the story is an area they're focusing on expanding greatly. Not in the way you described though. I guess the one random thing I

(3/3) can toss out there as an example is, have you ever thought about what Dr. Salvador's deal in RE4 was? No? Well, prepare to be intrigued.
— AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem (@AestheticGamer1) June 24, 2020
Dusk Golem also touched upon how the Resident Evil 4 remake will play. The original game revolutionized the series and the gaming landscape, and by making the remake play like the original or the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes would prevent it from achieving what the original accomplished. This is quite interesting, as Resident Evil 4 plays great even for today's standards, and may have not needed a complete gameplay overhaul.
(2/2) as a whole, making it play just like RE2 & RE3 Remake or even like the original wouldn't achieve what the original RE4 accomplished. That's all I'm going to say for now, be ready to sit on this one for like a year until reveal.
— AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem (@AestheticGamer1) June 24, 2020
Resident Evil 4 Remake is rumored to be in development by M-Two. Original RE4 director Shinji Mikami is not directly involved in the creation of the remake, but he did contribute to make the project a reality.
The project does have Shinji Mikami's full approval, his help here is limited because he's obligated to GhostWire right now but part of how this project even came to be was through his decision and talking with Capcom.
The next entry in the Resident Evil series releasing next year is Resident Evil Village. The game was rumored to be a cross-gen release, but the technical limitations of current-gen hardware would have held it back considerably, according to a report.
The Resident Evil 4 Remake is rumored to release in 2022. We will keep you updated on it as soon as more come in on the game, so stay tuned for all the latest news.
Owlcat Games, an independent studio with offices in Russia and Cyprus, is making a name for itself among fans of roleplaying games.
The crowdfunded cRPG Pathfinder: Kingmaker was quite successful when it released on PC a couple of years ago and it's now getting a proper console port (just as we first reported back in November 2018), too, alongside an official turn-based mode (a community mod is already available) coming to PC as well. The game, just like its upcoming sequel Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, prominently featured writing by veteran game designer and writer Chris Avellone, who held the position of narrative designer on the project.
In light of the recent allegations of harassment and misconduct levied against Chris Avellone by several women, multiple studios have decided to cut ties with the writer, including Paradox Interactive, Techland, and Gato Salvaje. Since then, ALL-iN! Games (the publisher of Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms, another cRPG he had worked on) also shared a statement on Twitter.
All in! Games statement regarding our cooperation with Chris Avellone: pic.twitter.com/eFIKMzD7GP
— ALL iN! GAMES (@AllinGamesPub) June 23, 2020
We decided to reach out to Owlcat to inquire about the studio's position on this delicate matter since, as far as we publicly know, they're the last studio Avellone was working with. You can find their entire response below.
As many of our friends and colleagues from the industry, we are shocked by the allegations about Chris Avellone. Chris has contributed a lot to the RPG genre in his career, including our first game Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and his reputation never allowed us to expect any of this ever to happen. We at Owlcat do not condone sexual misconduct in any form. At the same time, we don’t uphold taking rushed actions based on allegations, and we will continue monitoring the situation closely to make an informed decision.
In fairness, Avellone himself didn't really fight the allegations, apologizing to his accusers via Twitter and admitting he should have been better.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, the next game in development at Owlcat, is scheduled to hit PC (Steam and GOG) by June 2021. You can already pre-order via the game's official website.

It’s been a little over a week since Mortal Kombat X was released for nex-gen consoles (and a few weeks since the iOS version became available). Today, the over-the-top gore fest finally lands on the Google Play Store for Android devices, courtesy of NetherRealm Studios and of course, is only suitable for ages 17 and up.
Gameplay is a bit different than that console versions, but anyone who’s played other “free-to-play” brawlers like Marvel Contest of Champions or previous Injustice will know what to expect. The actual fighting in the game involves mashing the screen to attack, with gestures cues and other quick time events popping up onscreen to execute some of the moves. It’s pretty basic and can get repetitive at times, but then again it’s the level grinding that really looks to suck players in.
The actual characters you use in battle are based on cards that can be leveled up the more you play, with successful matches netting you “Koins” (gold and silver) and “Souls.” Those are the currency in the game (freemium games tend to have at least 3 types of currency to keep things interesting) with the latter being the hardest to earn. Alliance points are earned with support cards, Koins are used to buy silver card packs for new characters or power up special moves, and Souls are the highest form of currency, used to gain access to gold characters.
All the violence you love from Mortal Kombat is here, with the series’ X-Rays and Fatalities making the successful transition to mobile. You can play online against other players in Faction Wars, or summon other players’ character cards for use in battle. Whatever your expectations of this game are, expect to spend plenty of time unlocking anything worthwhile.
If you look at reviews on the Google Play Store, you’ll find the game not running the best on older handsets. If your phone has 1GB of RAM or less, you’re probably going to want to stay away. The install takes up a whopping 1.5 GB of free space, so keep that in mind before downloading to your 8GB handset. The game is only available in select countries right now, but if you’d like to take a stab at it, Google Play link provided below.
Android and Google Chrome are getting closer together. Google expanded its App Runtime for Chrome (ARC) so that not only Chrome OS users, but also Mac, Windows and Linux users can run Android apps on their machine. Although ARC is directed to developers, this is a huge step forward for the integration of Android into Chrome. This paves the way for developers to work on their apps and create fully functional versions that you can download in the Chrome Webstore and run inside your browser.
If you cannot wait and want to try out some of your most used Android apps right now, all you need to do is download the ARC Welder app and get some apk files from Google’s Play Store.
How to download APK files directly from Google Play
Since Google doesn’t really want you to download APK files from their Play Store any other way than from an Android device (might be against the Play Store’s terms and conditions), you need to use a third party tool to download an app’s files.
I recommend using Evozi’s APK Downloader, an extremely easy online tool that generates direct download links from an app’s Play Store link. Simply copy the Play Store URL and paste it into the sites text field, select “Generate Download Link” and then click the green download button.
Insert and run Android apps using the ARC Welder app
Using the ARC Welder app is pretty easy and straightforward. Launch the app from your Chrome App Lauchner and select the big orange plus-button.
Go to the directory with your downloaded APK file(s) and select the one you want to run. In the next step, you can select different settings such as portrait or landscape as well as tablet or phone mode. You can leave the OAuth Client ID and Metadata field as is. After choosing the settings, select Launch App.
After going through the process you might have already understood that you can only run and test one app this way.
Since all of that is still in the beta stage, a number of apps won’t be compatible with ARC Welder. One reason is that not all Google Play Services are supported yet. I tried several apps and could run Instagram and Candy Crush Saga without problems. Others like Crossy Road and Clash of Clans didn’t work, but I’m confident that they’ll run eventually.
I hope that developers will get busy testing their apps on their computers and work on the compatibility with Chrome. This way, we might see Android apps popping up in the Chrome Webstore in the near future.
When deciding upon which Android tablet to buy, there are a lot of things to consider: display quality, processing power, size, weight, battery life etc. As with any investment, it's important to do some research before you purchase to make the most informed decision possible. Here are what we consider to be the best Android tablets that you can buy in 2015.
Design, power and portability: these three deciding factors are the reasons why this Samsung jewel has landed at the top of our tablet food chain. It measures less than 8 mm thick, and is capable of running any game or app you throw at it. Crucially, it comes with an S Pen stylus (making it an ideal tablet for students or artists who are likely to be taking notes and/or sketching) and has a great "multi-window" feature, which lets you have up to four windows open at any time.
It's safe to say that the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 is the best the world of Android tablets has to offer at the moment. This, however, comes at a cost; the Galaxy Note 10.1 price currently sits at around 549 USD. But if you consider that most of today's mobile technology has been crammed into one singular device, you’d understand why Samsung charges such big bucks: its Note-specific functions (S Pen, Air Gesture, etc), connectivity, performance, and portability puts this tablet in direct competition with laptops.
Display
10.1-inches, 2,560 x 1600 (WQXGA) TFT, Super Clear LCD
The first place runner up is yet another large Samsung tablet. The Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 comes with the same powerful performance, plus it has its own Bluetooth keyboard which can act as a cover.
The Note Pro 12.2 is an all-encompassing tablet – in addition to its many features, it has a huge visual impact thanks to its huge screen (multi-window mode is also available here). But there are some disadvantages, namely its 750 gram weight large size, which makes handling a bit more cumbersome than the 10.1-inch model.
Still, with the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 price set at around 550 USD, you can expect laptop-standard performance from this beauty.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is considered by many to be the finest tablet on Android.
This tablet deserves massive props because of its sleek design which combines slick plastic with luxurious and unique copper edges. The Galaxy Tab S, besides being the lightest 10-inch tablet produced by Samsung, has hardware which ensures top-class performance; you’ll be able to run resource-hungry applications with minimal delay.
But all of this is peanuts next to what really took our breath away: the Tab S is bestowed with a seriously incredible Super AMOLED screen, which according to DisplayMate, one of the most reliable sources when it comes to screen quality, is the best display on the market. (You can also find a similarly awesome 8.4-inch variation of the device with almost the same specs, only differing in the dimensions and pixels-per-inch.)
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 price is currently floating around the 350 USD mark, and this makes it one of the best tablet choices on Android.
4. Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet Sony's waterproof Xperia Z2 Tablet is a slender, strong contender for the best Android tablet title. /
Sony cracks the otherwise Samsung-laden list with the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet. Immediately drawing attention with its high class OmniBalance design, this tablet is beautifully weighted and also incredible thin (just 6.4 mm). In addition, Sony is on the ball when it comes to making waterproof devices: the Tablet Z2 has IP58 certification which makes it resistant to dust and water, and its hardware specifications are hard to beat.
Despite the lower screen resolution and battery capacity compared to other tablets on the list, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 achieved this position thanks to its beautiful looks and water-friendliness, as well as great performance. The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet price is set at 500 USD.

5. Sony Z3 Tablet Compact
The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is a little, lightweight gem from Sony, but it is pricey.
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is currently the world's "most powerful and lightest waterproof tablet". It houses an impressive Full-HD screen, making use of Sony's Triluminous and X-Reality technologies. In real terms, this means is that it looks more vibrant than it otherwise would, but it's more than just some marketing terminology, the screen is bright with great color depth.
The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will also be able to take advantage of Sony's PS4 remote play feature, turning your tablet into an alternative screen for all your PS4 games.
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact won't last quite as long as the fantastic Z2 Tablet in terms of battery life, but if you're looking for something a little smaller, without a huge sacrifice in quality, this is a great option. Plus, it still retains some of the neat features of its big brother such as water-resistance, Snapdragon 801 processor, and expandable memory up to 128 GB.
The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact price is sitting at around 418 USD on Amazon right now.

6. Nvidia Shield
The NVIDIA Shield's graphical prowess means it's still yet to be really tested by Android games in the Play Store.
The Nvidia Shield is a tablet for those who want a high-performance gaming device - in this regard, it's currently the best Android has to offer. You'll never encounter the frustration of not being able to download your favorite game due to hardware restrictions, and games you do play wont stutter or a crash, the device runs smooth like butter even when playing the most demanding of titles.
If you consider the gaming performance, as well as the attractive Nvidia Shield price (299 USD for the base model), this is a solid tablet that won’t swoon when the going gets tough.

Another superb Samsung tablet stemming from the ‘’older’’ Tab series, this edition of tablets was released a few months before the new Tab S devices, and thus is much more attractive when it comes to price, which has fallen drastically since its release.
The Tab Pro exists in three versions boasting different screen sizes: 12.2, 10.1 and 8.4 inches. The 12.2-inch version comes with 1 GB of RAM more than its siblings, also with increased battery capacity, but otherwise the hardware is the same, and all offer excellent performance.
Though this tablet serious does come with a sharp LCD screen, it’s no match for the Super AMOLED Tab S display, which is why it has landed further down our list. The Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 price ranges between 350 and 400 USD, so if you're interested in this one make sure you buy at the right time.

8. Google Nexus 9The Google Nexus 9, developed by HTC, is one of the best Android tablets in the world, even if it wasn't quite as good as we hoped it would be. /
The Nexus 9 finds itself at number eight on our list of best Android tablets, not because of its level of performance, but because of our slight disappointment that we felt after our initial review.
Sure, it was the first tablet in the world to show off Android 5.0 Lollipop, but its performance is not among the best. Nevertheless, it still has some great specs and features, with a brilliant 8.9-inch QXGA (2,048 x 1,536 pixels) LCD display, BoomSound stereo speakers, a killer 64-bit processor Nvidia Tegra K1, plus all of the new features offered by Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The Nexus 9 price is set at 399 USD, or 319 GBP and it still has a lot to offer Android fans, even if it wasn't quite up to our expectations.

9. Dell Venue 8 7840The Dell Venue 8 7840 has a great display, even if its shape is a little odd.
The Dell Venue 8 7840 is an extremely capable tablet, new in 2015 and is new to our list. It’s ultra-thin (just 6 mm thick) and metal clad, with Intel Inside technology ensuring it runs silky smooth.
Though it doesn't have a beautiful name, the Venue 8 7840 does have a beautiful 8.4-inch screen with 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, and 359 pixels-per-inch, making it one of the best looking tablets on Android.
The Dell Venue 8 has four cameras, one on the front and three on the back, which provide height and depth information in pictures. It’s a neat bit of technology, but it’s not the main reason to invest in the 7840; pick up this tablet if you want a sleek device with a quality display and fast processing. But be warned, it only houses around 8 GB of (usable) internal memory (though this is expandable via an external SD card).
This little tablet has snuck its way onto the list because it might be the best value tablet offering currently on Android. The Tesco Hudl 2 price is just 129 GBP, and for that you get a fast, 8.3-inch tablet, running on stock Android.
Rugged, with bright color options, it’s certainly family-friendly, but the Full-HD display and Dolby sound system ensures it delivers on the user-experience front too. As far as price/performance ratio is concerned, we’re convinced it’s one of the top choices on Android. Go and test one out in-store if you don’t believe us, or buy now from Tesco.com.
