The Huawei P40 Pro is a fantastic handset. It packs some pretty awesome hardware under the hood, but all of this is marred by the fact that it does not come with Google Play Services installed on it. This due to Huawei being placed on the US Entity list which ultimately prevents Huawei and Google from doing business with each other.

This means that Huawei is not able to license Google Play Services, which is why it is omitted from the phone. As much as we would like to think that alternative services and apps can fill that void, and we imagine that it could, the general perception and concern is that it will be a very different (and negative) experience.

The good news is there are ways in which you can actually get the Google Play Store installed on the Huawei P40 Pro. This is quite a lengthy process but it is fairly straightforward, so set aside 15-20 minutes to get the Google Play Store up and running on your P40 Pro.

Before you get started

• Backup your phone and all of its files in the event that something goes wrong
• You will need a USB C flash drive for the installation process or a regular USB flash drive and an adapter that will let you connect it to the Huawei P40 Pro
• Check your phone to make sure that the USB drive is recognized and active

How to install Google Play Store on the Huawei P40 Pro

1. Download the Huawei GMS Install file from here
2. Load it onto the USB drive and connect it to your Huawei P40 Pro
3. Go to Settings > System & updates > Backup & restore > Data backup > External storage > USB storage
4. Select the file you loaded onto the USB drive and tap Restore
5. Enter the password shown on your screen and tap OK
6. Clear all background applications
7. Look for the app on your home screen with a purple G icon and tap on it to launch the app

Once the app has launched:

1. Tap Activate
2. Tap Allow
3. Return to the home screen and clear all background apps again
4. Relaunch the app and tap on the blue button at the bottom of the app’s screen and let it run in the background

Once the apps have been installed:

1. Go to Settings > Users & accounts
2. Tap Add an account and select Google
3. You will be prompted with an error message informing you that the app was built for an older version of Android, but tap OK anyway
4. Tap Existing
5. Enter your Google login credentials and tap Sign in
6. Tap Next
7. At this point you can keep adding Google accounts you want associated with the device, but you will have to do so now because once the process is complete, you won’t be able to unless you restart the entire installation procedure
8. Clear all background applications

Installing the Google Services Framework

1. Go to your phone’s files and open the USB drive
2. Look for the Google installation folder and tap on it
3. Tap on the seventh file which will be Google Services Framework
4. Tap Allow
5. Tap Install and wait
6. Once installed, tap Done
7. Give the phone a minute or two and you will start seeing a bunch of error messages which will be normal. You can then choose to mute these error messages if they’re getting too annoying
8. Go to your phone’s home screen and you should see the Google Play Store app

To get rid of the error messages

1. Launch the newly-installed Google Play Store
2. Download and install an app called Device ID by VTechSevi
3. Launch the app and look for Google Service Framework
4. Clear your background applications
5. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps
6. Tap the three dot icon to the top right corner and select Show system processes
7. Look for Google Play Services
8. Tap Force Stop
9. Tap Uninstall
10. Clear all background applications
11. Go to your phone’s files and open the USB drive
12. Tap on the Google installation folder and install the eighth application called GMS Core Mod 1
13. Tap Allow
14. Tap Install
15. Go to your phone’s Settings > Apps
16. Tap the three-dot icon to the top right corner and select Show system processes
17. Look for Google Services Framework and tap on it and go to Storage
18. Tap Clear Cache and Clear Data

Regenerating the Google Services Framework ID

1. Clear all background applications
2. Launch the Device ID app and you will notice that the Google Services Framework ID is gone
3. Launch the Google Play Store – At this point some of you might be greeted by an error message asking you to retry. Keep doing this until the app launches without any error messages. This could take several attempts
4. Launch the Device ID app and check if the Google Services Framework ID has been regenerated
5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until the ID reappears
6. Once the Google Services Framework ID has been stored, go to your phone’s Settings > Apps
7. Tap the three-dot icon to the top right corner and select Show system processes
8. Look for Google Play Services
9. Tap Force Stop
10. Tap Uninstall
11. Go to your phone’s files and open the USB drive
12. Tap on the Google installation folder and install the ninth application called GMS Core Mod 2
13. Tap Allow
14. Tap Install

However, performing a factory reset to start things from scratch can be a daunting experience with many expecting that all their data would be lost. The Pixel has features built-in natively that ensure your data can be restored from the cloud following a factory reset, so here’s all the detail.

What backs up automatically

As soon as you log in to your Google account, certain things will upload automatically. Data in your Google Calendar, Contacts, and Photos and Videos will back up to the cloud. In addition, your installed apps and associated app data, call history, device settings, and SMS text messages will be uploaded but are limited to 25MB of data per app.

For anything not automatically backed up to the cloud, you can upload the content to Google Drive to store it safely in the cloud while you perform a factory reset.

Restore data & settings from the cloud

Following a factory reset on your Pixel, the device will reboot and take slightly longer to start up on first boot. Once the Pixel has rebooted, you’ll be presented with the welcome screen. Follow the below steps to restore your data from the cloud.

• Connect to the internet using either WiFi or Cellular.

Google decided some time ago that the power button on Android phones could be useful for quick access to commonly-used features. An iOS-style wallet was added to the Pixel in March so you can switch between payment cards or bring up travel passes and loyalty cards when you need them, and next on the list is smart home controls. Evidence of this arrived with Android 11's developer previews, but freshly leaked documentation now shows us what the final product is going to look like.

When we saw an early version of the power menu's home control center, the usual buttons such as Emergency and Power off were moved to the very top, and everything below was reserved for 'Quick controls.' With the wallet functionality since released, Google had to find a way to fit it all in, and the below image shows what they've likely settled on. The quality isn't the best, but the mockup taken from a leaked "Android R changes" document reveals that Google will be cramming the card switcher in between power options and quick controls.

The end result is a very busy screen, but a useful one nonetheless. If we're lucky, this will eventually have a contextual element — it would be great if the wallet was only displayed when you weren't at home, for example, allowing more smart home controls onto the screen when you need them the most. Another image from the leaked materials shows what the different states of IoT buttons will look like (below).

This gives us a good idea of which smart home gadgets will be controllable, including cameras, thermostats, and lights just as you'd expect. According to the documentation, short presses will toggle these on and off, while a long-press will bring up more options or take you to the corresponding app if necessary. It's unclear whether this will be completely tied to the Google Home app, or if you'll be able to add other unattached services. Google is postponing its Android 11 beta launch event which was supposed to take place on June 3. Called the 'Android 11 Beta Launch Show', the virtual event was comprised of a number of development-focused talks regarding the new features in Google's operating system update.

Google attributes the event postponement to the on-going situation in the United States. The official Android Developers Twitter account posted the following tweet:

We are excited to tell you more about Android 11, but now is not the time to celebrate. We are postponing the June 3rd event and beta release. We'll be back with more on Android 11, soon.

The first beta for Android 11 was originally planned to release at Google I/O, but the company cancelled the event due to the on-going pandemic. So this is the second time that Android 11 beta has been delayed.

Meanwhile, Google has been working on the developer previews for the operating system update and released Android 11 Developer Preview 4 on May 7. The developer previews are available for Google Pixel 2/2 XL, Pixel 3/3 XL, Pixel 3a/3a XL, and Pixel 4/4 XL.

It is unclear how this delay in the beta release will impact the overall timeline for Android 11 release. Beta 1 was planned for a release in June, with beta 2 following in July. Beta 3 was planned for an August release, and a final release in quarter 3 of 2020. For now, Google has not updated the timeline and milestones for Android 11 release. We might get more information on the updated timeline over the next few days.

Here is a recap of the new features coming in Android 11:

• Helpful innovation: This unsurprisingly starts with 5G, and Google frames it as a way for developers to “extend [their] Wi-Fi app experiences to mobile users.” Existing APIs have been updated to let applications determine what kind of connection they have access to. Also part of this tentpole is support for new display types, with one API letting devs use the entirety of a waterfall screen, including edges. To improve messaging, there’s a new dedicated conversation section of the notification shade, while Google is pushing Bubbles and letting you paste images into apps and replies.
• Privacy and security: Building off the ability to limit location to “While app is in use” — which is selected by half of users, are one-time permissions for location, microphone, and camera. Scoped storage will likely also go into effect this year. Meanwhile, Android 11 improves biometrics and features platform hardening, as well as secure app data storage and sharing. Users should be excited by electronic ID/driver license support.
• Updates and compatibility: Android 11 is expanding Project Mainline — visible to users as Google Play System Update — with 12 new modules that can be updated without OS releases. A new permissions module “standardizes user and developer access to critical privacy controls on Android devices.” Meanwhile, Google is giving developers a new “Platform Stability” milestone in July that will include final SDK/NDK APIs, internal APIs, and system behaviors.
• Polish and quality: There are various improvements to the connectivity stack, low latency video codecs, and for images/cameras. Highlights for the latter include HEIF animated drawables that are drastically smaller than GIFs, an API to mute vibration when capturing images, and bokeh.

Google’s new Nest Aware pricing model is rolling out starting this week, the company announced today. The new model means that a single subscription now covers all of your Nest devices, rather than asking you to pay on a per-device basis. It’s available in each of the 19 markets where Nest Aware is available, including the US, UK, Australia, France, and Germany.

The new Nest Aware subscription now costs $6 a month or $60 a year to cover all of your devices. That gets you 30 days of “event video history,” meaning you get the recordings from whenever the camera detects motion or sound. Jumping up to $12 a month ($120 a year) for Nest Aware Plus doubles your event history to 60 days and also gets you 10 days of 24/7 video recording history.

It’s a lot simpler than Nest’s previous pricing model in which subscription prices ranged from $5 to $30 per month per camera, with discounts offered to cover each subsequent device. However, the old model got you 24/7 video recording as standard, and now it’s something you have to pay extra for. If you’re an existing Nest Aware subscriber and you want to upgrade to the new Nest Aware subscription, you can do so within the Google Store. Be warned that you’ll have to migrate to a Google Account as part of the process.

In comparison, Amazon’s Ring subscription plan costs $10 a month or $100 a year if you want it to cover every device in your home, while Arlo’s entry-level $9.99-a-month plan covers up to five cameras. Both Ring and Arlo charge a reduced rate of $3 a month if you just want to cover a single camera.

As well as the new pricing model, Google also says that Nest speakers and displays in the US can now listen and alert you when they hear “critical sounds” like glass breaking or a smoke alarm. Once you’ve received the alert and listened to the sound, you then have the option of calling 911. If you call using the Home app, it will know to connect you with an operator who’s closest to your home rather than your phone’s location.

To coincide with the launch, Google is reducing the price of a couple of its Nest products: the Nest Hub is now available for $89.99, down from $129, and the Nest Cam indoor is $129.99, down from $199.
