Your iPhone says your payment method is invalid and you’re not sure why. Now you can’t make purchases in iTunes or the App Store! In this article, I’ll explain why it says Invalid Payment Method on your iPhone and show you how to fix the problem for good.

Update Your Payment Information

One of the most common reasons why it says Invalid Payment Method on your iPhone is because you have to update your payment information. It’s possible your current payment method has expired and needs to be updated. If you recently got a new credit card, you may only need to update your card’s expiration date and CVV number!

Open Settings and tap on Your Name at the top of the screen. Then, tap Payment & Shipping and enter your Apple ID password.

Next, tap on the payment method you’d like to update. You can either update the information about the card, or scroll all the way down and tap Change Payment Method if you have a new card.

When you’ve updated your payment information, tap Save in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Pay Any Unpaid Bills

You won’t be able to make new purchases on your iPhone if you have any unpaid bills or subscriptions. Open Settings and tap on Your Name -> iTunes & App Store.

Tap on your Apple ID, then tap View Apple ID and enter your password. Tap Purchase History to see if there are any unpaid purchases on your iPhone. If you have any unpaid purchases, tap on them to update your information and make the payment.

Sign Out Of Your Apple ID & Log In Again

If your payment information is up to date and you don’t have any unpaid purchases, it’s time to address an issue with your Apple ID. One quick way to fix a minor glitch with your Apple ID is to log out and back into your account.

Open Settings and tap on Your Name at the top of the menu. Scroll down and tap Sign Out to log out of your Apple ID.

To sign back into your Apple ID, open Settings and tap the Sign In button at the top of the screen.

Contact Apple Support

If it still says Invalid Payment Method on your iPhone, it’s time to contact Apple support. Some Apple ID issues are very complex and can only be resolved by an upper-level Apple customer service representative.

Visit Apple’s support website to schedule an appointment at a store near you or get on the phone with a customer service representative.

Although still limited in scope, 5G networks are here. The only issue, apart from living in a compatible location and being on a compatible network, is that you also need a 5G-enabled phone too.

Most phone makers have now released 5G devices already but we're still awaiting the first 5G-enabled iPhone. 

Many US cities already have mmWave (millimetre wave) 5G networks but in limited areas, with other US towns and cities using lower-band 5G. UK 5G networks are using sub-6 (mid-band) bands at the moment, but plan to roll out mmWave in cities for higher-capacity coverage in 2020 or 2021.

It's worth remembering that although the iPhone 5G might seem late to the party for some, it's still very early days for 5G while Apple has form for being late to embrace network upgrades - remember the 2G-enabled debut iPhone living in a 3G world?

This is everything we know so far about a 5G-enabled iPhone, including when it might arrive and what the rumours say.

Apple hasn't announced when it will officially announce a 5G iPhone of course, but we're expecting the models debuting in late 2020 to support 5G.

Reports suggest Apple will support 5G in at least one of its 2020 iPhone models. It's worth remembering that the coronavirus is causing havoc with production in China and huge swathes of tech launches are set to suffer as a result - so things that were previously worked out could change, especially for next-generation products like a 5G iPhone. 

Apple itself issued guidance on its quarterly earnings in February 2020 which reflected the coronavirus outbreak and stated "work is starting to resume around the country, but we are experiencing a slower return to normal conditions than we had anticipated.

"As a result, we do not expect to meet the revenue guidance we provided for the March quarter due to two main factors. The first is that worldwide iPhone supply will be temporarily constrained.

"While our iPhone manufacturing partner sites are located outside the Hubei province — and while all of these facilities have reopened — they are ramping up more slowly than we had anticipated."

While this appears to point specifically to the current situation, the implication is clear to us that there could be some knock-on effects for the rest of 2020.

18 February 2020: Qualcomm debuts the X60 modem

Qualcomm introduced its latest X60 5G modem that we think could end up being the modem inside the iPhone 5G. The new modem enables networks to aggregate (combine) spectrum across both the faster mmWave (millimetre wave) 5G band as well as 'sub-6', giving slower speeds but wider coverage.

Qualcomm and Apple made up in early 2019 after years of legal disputes and it's nailed on that Qualcomm 5G modems will be inside the first 5G iPhone although we know - see below - that Apple is determined to develop its own 5G hardware. 

18 February 2020: Which antenna will Apple use inside the new iPhone?

A report on 17 February suggested that Apple wanted to make its own 5G antennae for the first 5G iPhone. The rumour suggested that Apple wasn't happy with the size of Qualcomm's antenna but, as by magic, Qualcomm then announced a smaller antenna, the QTM535.  

30 October 2019: Apple 5G iPhone 12 plans ramped up, with three models tipped for 2020

Nikkei Asian Review reported that sources have claimed Apple is in talks with mobilisation suppliers to produce a range of three iPhones with 5G data connectivity in 2020.

10 September 2019: Apple introduces the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max

Of course, none of these handsets were 5G as expected meaning the 5G iPhone is surely nailed on for 2020. 

25 July 2019: Apple buys Intel's smartphone modem business for $1 billion

Apple officially signed the deal to buy "the majority" of Intel's smartphone modem business for $1 billion. The deal includes 2,200 Intel employees, as well as IP and equipment.

The transaction is expected to close toward the end of 2019, and it means Apple will be able to produce its own 5G modems for its smartphones eventually, instead of getting them from Qualcomm. Bloomberg is speculating Apple's in-house modems could be ready in three years, so probably by 2022.

22 July 2019: Apple might buy Intel's 5G modem biz despite Qualcomm deal

The Wall Street Journal said Apple might make a deal with Intel that will see it purchase Intel's smartphone modem business for $1 billion.

The deal would follow Intel's announcement from April that it planned to exit the 5G mobile modem business. 

18 June 2019: Analyst predicts iPhone 5G coming in 2020

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed all iPhones will have 5G capabilities by 2021 and Apple would probably have its own 5G chip by 2023. 

16 April 2019: Apple and Qualcomm settle legal issues, while Intel quits 5G

Following two years of legal disputes, Apple and Qualcomm settled in April 2019, much to everyone's surprise. The settlement resulted in Apple making a payment to Qualcomm and the two companies also signed a six-year license agreement, effective from 1 April 2019. 

There's an option in the settlement to extend the agreement for two years, plus a multiyear "chipset supply agreement". It led many to believe Apple may release a 5G iPhone sooner than 2020 as Qualcomm already have a 5G modem in place.

On the same day as the Qualcomm and Apple settlement, Intel announced it was quitting the 5G modem business, with its CEO saying "it has become apparent that there is no clear path to profitability and positive returns."

7 February 2019: Apple moves modem chip engineering in-house

Reuters reported that sources familiar with the matter claimed Apple has moved its modem chip engineering efforts into its in-house hardware team.

The move appears to be an indication that Apple is working on its own chips, rather than outsourcing. 

5 November 2018: iPhone 12 will be the first 5G iPhone

The Fast Company reported in November 2018 that Apple would use Intel's 8161 5G modems in 2020 [which turned out to be false as work on that modem was binned] which led many to assume the first 5G compatible iPhone would be the iPhone 12.

At the time of that report, Apple and Qualcomm were still in a legal dispute, which resulted in Apple switching to Intel chips for some of its iPhones.

Two weeks ago, I went to the AMC theater on Broadway and 68th street in New York City to see the cinematic masterpiece that is “Furious 7.”

Fast-forward through two hours and 20 minutes of heart-stopping action and soul-crushing tributes to the late Paul Walker, and I’m gathering my belongings to leave the theater. Before I even get to the exit, I hear a familiar “cha-ching” come from my pocket. It was time to make some money.

I’m not a drug dealer or anything, but I do enjoy making a few dollars on the side. My moneymaking tool of choice is the supercomputer that goes with me anywhere and everywhere: my iPhone 6.

Spare5 and Surveys On The Go (SOTG) are two free-to-download Android and iOS apps that pay users to take surveys and complete simple tasks.

The “cha-ching” from my pocket is the notification sound of SOTG. The app used my phone’s GPS to determine that I was spending time in a movie theater. It sent me a notification saying “there is a $5.00 survey available for you. Would you like to take it?”

The app’s questions are simple. If you are at a theater, it’ll give you a list of all movies that are out, and you select the one that you saw. The survey, which only takes a few minutes to complete, will ask what you thought of the movie and the actors, and if you would recommend that a friend see the same film.

If you are a frequent radio listener, you may be prompted to take a survey about your listening habits, which can pay you up to $4.00.

Spare5 works a little bit differently. Its goal is to help companies make themselves more search engine optimized, so you’ll be flicking through random photos, selecting tags that you feel best describe them. Instead of pulling out your phone to check Facebook again, you can instead make some coin.

Neither of these apps will make you rich, though. Most surveys will earn you 10 cents, and even if you used Spare5 for an hour straight you wouldn’t crack $2. But you’ll find that your downtime can add up.

Next go shopping at stores like Target and Walgreens and take photos of your receipts. Once your transaction has been verified, your account will be credited with a specified cash back amount. Refer your friends and earn even more money. Payments are made via PayPal and can be transferred as soon as you earn $5.00. Locket

Locket is only available for Android systems and it basically pays you to place advertisements on your phone’s home screen. Once you unlock your phone the ad will appear, swipe one way to interact with the ad, and the other way to access your phone’s functions – either way you get paid. Locket uses a proprietary algorithm that pays based on how often you unlock your phone throughout the day. You account must reach $10.00 to request a payout and payments are made via PayPal.

Poshmark

Poshmark is an application where individuals can sell women’s fashion clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories. Download the application on your iPhone, create an account, and then start taking photos of the items you wish to sell. Once the item sells, print out a pre-paid, pre-addressed shipping label and send off your item. When the buyer receives the item, Poshmark will deposit 80% of the sale price into your account. Payments are made either by direct deposit or check.

Receipt Hog

Available for Android and iPhone systems, Receipt Hog pays you money for shopping and taking surveys. Download the app and take photos of your receipts from any grocer, super-center, club store, dollar store, drug store, convenience mart, beauty supply, or pet supply store. Once receipts are inputted into the system, Receipt Hog will award you with virtual coins that can be traded in for cash through PayPal or an Amazon gift card. The information that Receipt Hog collects is summarized and used in market research reports that companies will pay for. The amount of coins you earn per receipt depends on how much your total bill is. You can submit 20 receipts per week and trade 1,000 coins in for $5.00.

Shopkick

I’m totally addicted to this app! Shopkick is a really cool rewards program that is available for iPhone and Android phones. Just download the app to your phone and when you walk into your favorite stores (Old Navy, Crate & Barrel, Exxon, Target, Macy’s, etc) you’ll instantly earn kicks. Scan specified bar codes once you’re in the store to earn more kicks. Link up your credit card, browse through look-books, or refer your friends for even more kicks. Kicks can be used for gift cards from Target, Old Navy, Starbucks, or on items like clothing, electronics, or even a cruise! Shopkick has been featured on The Huffington Post, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal.

SwagBucks

Another one of my faves … SwagBucks is an online platform where you can earn digital dollars called SwagBucks, which can be redeemed for gift cards, coupons, and sweepstake entries. They also have a smartphone app for iPhone and Android operating systems. You can easily earn SwagBucks by watching videos, answering questions, completing offers, and even surfing the web using their toolbar. Refer your friends and you’ll earn even more SwagBucks. Your digital dollars can be traded in for gift cards from Amazon, Target, Starbucks, PayPal, and Walmart.

Viggle

Do you love to watch TV or listen to music? Then Viggle is for you. Just download the app to your Android or iPhone, check in with Viggle button and start earning points by watching TV or listening to music. You can even engage and answer questions for more points. Points can be redeemed for rewards from companies like Starbucks, Foot Locker, Groupon and Best Buy.
