Scammy iOS apps used Touch ID to push users toward $99 payouts

Scammy iOS apps used Touch ID to push users toward $99 payouts

A few scammy iOS applications have been taking advantage of Apple’s Touch ID platform by trying to trick users into making payments with false promises of using the fingerprint scans for fitness data, according to ESET’s WeLiveSecurity blog.
The two apps — called “Fitness Balance” and “Calories Tracker” — were spotted by various Reddit users over the last week, and both employ similar tactics. As part of their so-called “fitness tracking,” the apps ask users to place their fingerprint on the Touch ID scanner for 10 seconds, to “create personalized diet and other stuff.” While a user’s finger is placed on the pad, the app pops up an in-app purchase payment request for sums of money like $99.99. Since the user’s finger is already on the Touch ID pad, the request can be approved almost immediately.

This hack works because Touch ID is such a seamless process. By trying to be as fast and unobtrusive as possible, the phone starts scanning the finger that’s already on the pad as soon as the payment request pops up. The speed at which Touch ID works means that by the time a user has processed what’s going on, the payment has already been approved.
There are legitimate technologies that can provide fitness information like this, like the Apple Watch Series 4’s upcoming EKG feature that has users place their finger on a side button to measure their heart data. And while those features have nothing to do with fingerprint scanning, it’s easy to see how some users made the mistake of thinking that an iPhone could do something similar.

Based on the similar UI, it seems likely that both apps were created by the same developer. Fortunately, both seem to have been removed from the App Store, and hopefully Apple will keep a closer eye on this kind of UI hacking in the future.

Google releases new Handwriting Input keyboard

Google releases new Handwriting Input keyboard

Search giant Google has released a new handwriting keyboard for Android devices called “Google Handwriting Input.”
The Keyboard works with devices running Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3) and up, and supports input in both print and cursive writing in 82 languages.
The main features of the keyboard are:
  1. A useful complement to touchscreen typing or voice input
  2. Useful for languages that can be challenging to type on a standard keyboard
  3. Works across any Android phones and tablets running Android 4.0.3 and up
You can switch to it just as you would any other keyboard and see it looks identical in styling to the current Google Keyboard.
If you’re writing something out and decide you want to switch back to a keyed keyboard, you can do so in just one tap on the globe button left of the space bar.
You can use both a finger and a stylus, and the keyboard handles even the messiest of handwriting input pretty well.

How to download the latest Google Play Store APK free [5.4.11 out now]

How to download the latest Google Play Store APK free [5.4.11 out now]

The Google Play Store is free, but there are plenty of tablets and smartphones that don't come with it pre-installed. Fortunately, it's super-easy to get Google's app marketplace running on your Android device, so you don't have to worry about missing out on all the Play Store has to offer. Here is our guide on how to download and install the latest version of the Google Play Store APK (5.4.11) manually, granting you access to its wonderful world of apps, games, books, movies and more.

Get the Google Play Store APK [5.4.11]

The simplest method is one that should already be quite familiar to you if you're an avid follower of AndroidPIT: just install the Play Store APK manually. An APK is the Android version of a .exe program on your computer.
Instead of downloading an app from the Play Store, you simply install it yourself without the Play Store's help . This is, of course, extra useful when it is the Play Store itself you want to install.
Currently, the latest version is 5.4.11, which brings with it some UI changes, new Material Design elements, and a whole host of minor bug fixes.

How to install Google Play 5.4.11 manually

There are two ways to get the Google Play APK installed on your device: directly on your phone or with your computer. We'll do the easy option first.
Install Google Play (phone method)
  • Enable ''Unknown Sources'' by going to Settings > Security, then ticking the box next to Unknown sources. Don't be alarmed, unknown sources are simply locations outside of the Play Store, which is critical if it's the Play Store itself that you're after.
  • Using the browser on your device, go to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • You may get a message warning that 'this type of file can harm your device.' Ignore it (trust us) and tap OK.
  • Open the APK (you can tap the completed download in your notifications menu), read the new permissions (if any) that the new Play Store version requests, then tap Install.

Before you can install APKs, you need to enable Unknown Sources in your settings.

Install Google Play (computer method)
If you don't have a data or Wi-Fi connection on your device, you can download the APK to your computer instead. The same process applies:
  • Enable 'Unknown sources' on your device.
  • Using the browser on your computer, go to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and copy the APK over to your Android.
  • Launch it the APK, accept permissions and tap Install.

Sideloading from your PC with a USB cable can sometimes avoid install problems with APKs.
  • Google Play Store troubleshooting
Google Services Framework is a crucial service that lets the Play Store communicate with apps on your device - allowing for automatic updates and so on. If these functions stop working, or you experience other problems, then there may be a problem with the service, and you should clear the cache on Google Play Store and 'Google Play services.' To do this:
  • Go to Settings > Apps
  • Scroll down to Google Play Store, tap it, then tap 'Clear cache'.
  • Do the same for Google Play services
  • That should fix most problems you'll experience with the Play Store
Note: depending on what type of device you have, you may need to be rooted to manually install the Play Store, but that's a tutorial for another day.
Do you prefer to stay ahead of the curve by downloading app APKs manually, or do you like to play it safe and wait for the official rollouts? Let us know.

LG G-Pad lines will get Android 5.0 Lollipop update on April 12

LG G-Pad lines will get Android 5.0 Lollipop update on April 12

LG G Pad mid-range tablet lines. G Pad 7.0, 8.0 and 10.1
  • LG G Pad mid-range tablet lines. G Pad 7.0, 8.0 and 10.1
At this point the only LG tablet to ever receive a Google Android update has been the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition، and it is for good reason، since the rollouts are purely handled by Google.
But، now LG released mid-range tablet lines، the LG G-Pad 7.0، 8.0 and 10.1 will be getting their own Android’s latest rollout، the Android Lollipop 5.0. Expected date of release is tomorrw، 12th April.
This is apparently the expected and intended release date for the rollouts، however since the update is coming to the a tablet-line all at once، update time-lines may vary depending on region.
The good news is that the new update will be available from LG’s official website، so if you do not wish to wait for the upgrade files to show up on your tablet devices، you can download the needed files from the website.
So far، it is not clear if LG will have their own set of added new features in the update rollouts، aside from the Google-tailored features present in Lollipop.
