Your iPhone's Hidden Back Tap Button Has 5 More Actions Available with iOS 18

There are more actions available for the Action button, but only a handful of iPhone models have that button. However, there is another button with new features you can use, and you can access all the fresh features on any iPhone model that can run iOS 18. The button in question is Back Tap, which isn't technically a button since there isn't a physical mechanism to press or click or an onscreen item to tap. Instead, Back Tap lets you tap the back of your iPhone two or three times to trigger whatever action you assign to its double-tap and triple-tap gestures. It can detect these gestures... more

In the latest software updates for iPhone and iPad, there's an even easier way to view all your saved Wi-Fi networks and credentials and share them with family, friends, and others who need access. For a while now, whenever your Wi-Fi-connected iPhone or iPad gets close to another Apple device not on any Wi-Fi network, you may see a prompt appear to share the password. It's a quick and easy way to help others connect to the same Wi-Fi hotspot, but it only works between Apple devices. When iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.1 came out, Apple gave us a convenient way to see stored wireless networks. Go to... more

Apple Rereleases iOS 17.6.1 for iPhone with Important Bug Fixes

While Apple is full steam ahead on iOS 18, which is expected to drop sometime next month, it hasn't forgotten about iOS 17, which still dominates most users' iPhones. On Aug. 19, Apple issued a rerelease of its iOS 17.6.1 software for iPhone. Apple initially released iOS 17.6.1 just nine days after iOS 17.6 came out. Like most point-point updates, the Aug. 7 software (build 21G93) was all about bug fixes. That remains true for the updated version of iOS 17.6.1, pushed out on Aug. 19 with the build number 21G101. There aren't any security vulnerabilities patched in either update. And there... more

How This '90s Tech Feature Makes iPhone Calling Better Than Ever

How This '90s Tech Feature Makes iPhone Calling Better Than Ever

Tech tends to move forward without looking back, but that doesn't mean new is always better. One feature that dominated mobile phones in the late '90s is making a comeback thanks to Apple, and you can take advantage of it on your iPhone when making calls. Text on 9 keys, known better as T9, is a predictive text technology that makes texting possible on old-fashioned phones with physical keypads. On these cell phones, letters occupy digits 2 through 9, with the 1 key used for punctuation, the number sign or pound sign key (#) as shift, and the star key (*) used as a space. Since you had to... more

How to Silence Annoyingly Loud Emergency Alerts on iPhone Without Disabling Them Completely

How to Silence Annoyingly Loud Emergency Alerts on iPhone Without Disabling Them Completely

Wireless emergency alerts help warn mobile phone users of imminent threats to life or property, such as extreme weather and natural disasters. These alerts target affected geographic areas and come with a loud sound scary enough to make you want to turn off emergency alerts altogether on your iPhone, but there's a way to keep emergency alerts without the ear-splitting, intrusive sound. State and local government-issued alerts have been silenceable since iOS 14.5, so any iPhone model that's an iPhone 6S or newer can mute alert sounds. If you want to get straight to silencing these alerts, skip... more

While Apple is full steam ahead on iOS 18, which is expected to drop sometime next month, it hasn't forgotten about iOS 17, which still dominates most users' iPhones. Just nine days after the release of iOS 17.6, we already have iOS 17.6.1, and like with most point-point updates, the August 7 software (build 21G93) is all about bug fixes. There aren't any security vulnerabilities patched in this update. And there are "important bug fixes" that aren't named, which is typical of Apple. But there is one primary concern that Apple addressed: a fix for broken Advanced Data Protection. This update... more
