Flash of luck: Astronomers find source of powerful cosmic fast radio burst

A flash of luck helped astronomers solve a cosmic mystery: What causes powerful but fleeting radio bursts that zip and zigzag through the universe? Scientists have known about these energetic pulses — called fast radio bursts — for about 13 years and have seen them coming from outside our galaxy, which makes it harder to trace them back to what’s causing them. Making it even harder is that they happen so fast, in a couple of milliseconds.

Then this April, a rare but considerably weaker burst coming from inside our own Milky Way galaxy was spotted by two dissimilar telescopes: one a California doctoral student’s set of handmade antenna s, which included actual cake pans, the other a $20 million Canadian observatory.

They tracked that fast radio burst to a weird type of star called a magnetar that’s 32,000 light-years from Earth, according to four studies in Wednesday’s journal Nature.

It was not only the first fast radio burst traced to a source, but the first emanating from our galaxy. Astronomers say there could be other sources for these bursts, but they are now sure about one guilty party: magnetars.

Magnetars are incredibly dense neutron stars, with 1.5 times the mass of our sun squeezed into a space the size of Manhattan. They have enormous magnetic fields that buzz and crackle with energy, and sometimes flares of X-rays and radio waves burst from them, according to McGill University astrophysicist Ziggy Pleunis, a co-author of the Canadian study.

The magnetic field around these magnetars “is so strong any atoms nearby are torn apart and bizarre aspects of fundamental physics can be seen,” said astronomer Casey Law of the California Institute of Technology, who wasn’t part of the research.

There are maybe a dozen or so of these magnetars in our galaxy, apparently because they are so young and part of the star birth process, and the Milky Way is not as flush with star births as other galaxies, said Cornell University Shami Chatterjee, who wasn’t part of either discovery team.

This burst in less than a second contained about the same amount of energy that our sun produces in a month, and still that’s far weaker than the radio bursts detected coming from outside our galaxy, said Caltech radio astronomer Christopher Bochenek. He helped spot the burst with handmade antennas.

These radio bursts aren’t dangerous to us, not even the more powerful ones from outside our galaxy, astronomers said.

The ones that come from outside our galaxy and travel millions or billions of light-years are “tens of thousands to millions of times more powerful than anything we have detected in our galaxy,” said co-author Daniele Michilli, an astrophysicist at McGill and part of the Canadian team.

Scientists think these are so frequent that they may happen more than 1,000 times a day outside our galaxy. But finding them isn’t easy.

“You had to be looking at the right place at the right millisecond,” Cornell’s Chatterjee said. “Unless you were very, very lucky, you’re not going to see one of these.”

Even though this is a frequent occurrence outside the Milky Way, astronomers have no idea how often these bursts happen inside our galaxy.

“We still don’t know how lucky we got,” Bochenek said. “This could be a once-in-five-year thing or there could be a few events to happen each year.”

Bochenek’s antennas cost about $15,000. Each is “the size of a large bucket. It’s a piece of 6-inch metal pipe with two literal cake pans around it,” the doctoral student said. They are crude instruments designed to look at a giant chunk of the sky — about a quarter of it — and see only the brightest of radio flashes.

Bochenek figured he had maybe a 1-in-10 chance of spotting a fast radio burst in a few years. But after one year, he hit pay dirt.

The Canadian observatory in British Columbia is more focused and refined but is aimed at a much smaller chunk of the sky, and it was able to pinpoint the source to the magnetar in the constellation Vulpecula.

Because the bursts are affected by all the material they pass through in space, astronomers might be able to use them to better understand and map the invisible-to-us material between galaxies and “weigh” the universe, said Jason Hessels, chief astronomer for the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, who wasn’t part of the research.

Astronomers have had as many 50 different theories for what causes these fast radio bursts, including aliens, and they emphasize that magnetars may not be the only answer, especially since there seem to be two types of fast radio bursts. Some, like the one spotted in April, happen only once, while others repeat themselves often.

Michilli said his team has traced one outburst that happens every 16 days to a nearby galaxy and is getting close to pinpointing the source.

Some of these young magnetars are only a few decades old, “and that’s what gives them enough energy to produce repeating fast radio bursts,” Cornell’s Chatterjee said.

Tracking even one outburst is a welcome surprise and an important finding, he said.

“No one really believed that we’d get so lucky,” Chatterjee said. “To find one in our own galaxy, it just puts the cherry on top.”

Virgin Orbit rocket launched from 747 wing deploys nine CubeSats in successful second attempt

Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit reached space on Sunday, eight months after the first demonstration flight of its air-launched rocket system failed, the company said. A 70-foot-long (21.34-meter-long) LauncherOne rocket was released from beneath the wing of a Boeing 747 carrier aircraft off the coast of Southern California, ignited moments later and soared toward space. The two-stage rocket carried a cluster of very small satellites known as CubeSats developed and built as part of a NASA educational program involving US universities.

The launch occurred after the Boeing 747-400 took off from Mojave Air and Space Port in the desert north of Los Angeles and flew out over the Pacific Ocean to a drop point beyond the Channel Islands.

“According to telemetry, LauncherOne has reached orbit!” Virgin Orbit tweeted later. “Everyone on the team who is not in mission control right now is going absolutely bonkers.”

The rocket’s upper stage coasted for a period, reignited to circularize the orbit and then deployed the nine CubeSats.

The flight developments were announced on social media. The launch was not publicly livestreamed.

The Virgin Orbit Boeing 747-400 rocket launch platform was used in the rocket's first success and second attempt to reach space. AP

Virgin Orbit, based in Long Beach, California, is part of a wave of companies targeting the launch market for increasingly capable small satellites, which may range in sizes comparable to a toaster on up to a home refrigerator.

Competitor Rocket Lab, also headquartered in Long Beach, has deployed 96 payloads in 17 launches of its Electron rocket from a site in New Zealand. Another of its rockets was nearing launch Sunday.

Virgin Orbit touts the flexibility of its capability to begin its missions by using airports around the globe. Virgin Orbit attempted its first demonstration launch in May 2020. The rocket was released and ignited but only briefly flew under power before it stopped thrusting. The lost payload was only a test satellite. The company later said an investigation determined there was a breach in a high-pressure line carrying cryogenic liquid oxygen to the first-stage combustion chamber.

Virgin Orbit is separate from Virgin Galactic, the company founded by Branson to carry passengers on suborbital hops in which they will experience the sensations and sights of spaceflight.

Virgin Galactic expects to begin commercial operations this year in southern New Mexico.

Apple vs Epic trial: Tim Sweeney's company struggles to prove its allegations against App Store

Apple vs Epic trial: Tim Sweeney's company struggles to prove its allegations against App Store

If Epic Games hopes to dismantle the fortress surrounding Apple’s iPhone and its app store, the video game maker probably will need to roll out some heavier artillery heading into the second week of a trial threatening Apple’s $2 trillion empire. So far, at least, Epic has been having trouble proving its allegations that the iPhone maker’s 13-year-old App Store has turned into an illegal monopoly.

Epic, the maker of the popular Fortnite game, contends Apple has been gouging app makers by charging commissions ranging from 15 percent to 30 percent for in-app transactions because it forbids other options on its iPhone, iPad and iPod. When Epic tried to evade the commissions with an alternative payment system in Fortnite last August, Apple ousted it from the app store to set up a legal showdown that could force it to lower its fees.

Apple contends the commissions are a reasonable toll paid by a minority of the 1.8 million apps in its store to help cover the more than $100 billion it has invested in mobile software, The Cupertino, California, company also maintains its ironclad control over apps allowed on its mobile devices helps protect its customers’ security and privacy.

At times, it seemed like Cary, North Carolina-based Epic was helping make Apple’s case as much as its own during the the first week of the trial being held in an Oakland, California, courtroom.

For instance, at one point during his two days on the witness stand, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney acknowledged he personally used an iPhone instead of smartphones running on Google’s Android software because he thought Apple offered better security and privacy controls.

Epic Games vs Apple trial goes to court. (Image: tech2/Nandini Yadav)

Sweeney also acknowledged Apple made changes to iPhone’s software to help make it possible for Fortnite players to compete against each other while one was on a phone and the other was on a video game console. The expansion of so-called “cross-platform” play helped propel Fortnite’s growth to more than 400 million users.

Other internal documents showed Epic’s executives profusely thanking Apple for the support Fortnite was getting in the app store.

Other evidence raised questions about whether Epic’s efforts to create a competing app store that imposes a commission of only 12 percent will pay off. The store is expected to post a profit ranging from $15 million to $36 million by 2024, but it will still have run up cumulative losses $654 million to $854 million, according to Epic’s internal projections presented at the trial.

Apple’s store, by contrast, quickly became highly profitable shortly after it opened with just 500 apps in 2008 — a year after the debut of the first iPhone. Epic has repeatedly pointed to evidence that Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs initially didn’t expect the app store to be a profit center, but then apparently changed his mind after it accumulated $2.1 billion in billings during 2010, according to an Apple slide presentation.

The trial hasn’t yet revealed just how profitable Apple’s app store has become. Apple doesn’t disclose the store’s financial results, but it is an important part of the company’s steadily growing services division, which generated $57 billion in revenue last year alone. The success of those services coupled with the iPhone’s ongoing popularity is a key reason why Apple currently boasts a market value of $2.2 trillion — more than any other US company. In contrast, privately held Epic is valued at nearly $30 billion.

More financial details about Apple’s app store are expected to be presented during the trial’s second week. Perhaps the most revealing moments may come when one of Epic’s experts, Ned Barnes of the Berkeley Research Group, takes the stand to discuss his analysis of the app store’s profits.

Apple unsuccessfully tried to convince US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to close the courtroom during Barnes’ testimony because his financial analysis “unduly confuse” investors and cause wild swings in its stock.

But even if the app store’s profits are higher than anyone fathomed, that won’t necessarily help Epic prove its allegations that Apple is running a monopoly that hurts competition.

“Being successful is not an antitrust violation in and of itself,” said Daniel Lyons, a Boston College law professor. “The argument that your prices are much higher than your costs may play well to a lay audience, but it doesn’t hold up legally.”

For all the drama, Lyons and other experts say the decision that will ultimately be made by the judge during this non-jury trial will boil down to market definitions. Epic contends the iPhone has become a market by itself, while Apple argues it should also include other devices, including video game consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation that also charge 30% commissions on gaming transactions.

“If I were a betting man, I would certainly say Apple has the stronger case under existing case law,” said Larry Downes, project director of Georgetown University’s Center for Business and Public Policy. “You have to put yourself in the standpoint of the consumer, and that’s what the judge really has to do. If it’s not harming consumers, then this is just a contract dispute between two companies, with one of them trying to use litigation to renegotiate the terms.”

Virgin Galactic unveils second piloted spacecraft VSS Imagine, test flight slated for May 2021

Virgin Galactic rolled out its newest spaceship Tuesday as the company looks to resume test flights in the coming months at its headquarters in the New Mexico desert. Company officials said it will likely be summer before the ship — designed and manufactured in California — undergoes glide flight testing at Spaceport America in southern New Mexico. That will coincide with the final round of testing for the current generation of spacecraft, which will be the one that takes British billionaire and Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson to the fringes of space later this year.

CEO Michael Colglazier said the addition of the new ship marks the beginning of Virgin Galactic having a fleet that will one day be capable of ferrying paying customers and scientific payloads from spaceports around the globe. The company is still aiming for commercial operations to begin next year following testing and a few months of downtime for maintenance and other upgrades.

Virgin Galactic has reached space twice before — the first time from California in December 2018. The company marked its second successful glide flight over Spaceport America last June. Virgin Galactic is one of a few companies looking to cash in on customers with an interest in space. Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin launched a new capsule in January as part of test as it aims to get its program for tourists, scientists and professional astronauts off the ground.

The mirror-like finish on Virgin Galactic's new ship is as much about aesthetics as it is about function. A key part of the ship's thermal protection system, Colglazier said it also was chosen so the craft could take on the look and feel of its surroundings — whether it's on Earth, in the sky or in space. The other task of the engineers was to create a new version that would be easier to manufacture and to maintain.

“Obviously for us to take tens of thousands of people to space, we need a number of ships. But it really matters then how often can each of these ships fly,” Colglazier said. “We expect as we get going on this to see a much quicker turnaround time and that really will help us grow the business.”

First, Virgin Galactic needs regulatory approval for the current generation and that means successful rocket-powered test flights.

The first powered test from Spaceport America was scheduled for December but computer trouble caused by electromagnetic interference prevented the spaceship’s rocket from firing properly. Instead of soaring toward space, the ship and its two pilots were forced to make an immediate landing.

The test was rescheduled for February but then scrapped as the team continued working on the interference issue. Colglazier said the flight now is scheduled for May.

The delay didn't help stock prices. Colglazier said while it's important to put points on the board and meet market expectations, the company's focus is on safety at each step and the decades ahead.

“I think this is moving as we want it to move. It is stepwise — that is what we want to do with human spaceflight," he said, “but you can also see the monument building. We’re excited for this unveiling today and we’re excited for May and we’re excited for the summer to come.”

Indian mathematician Nikhil Srivastava awarded prestigious 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize

Indian mathematician Nikhil Srivastava awarded prestigious 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize

Nikhil Srivastava, a young Indian mathematician, has been named winner of the prestigious 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize along with two others for solving long-standing questions on the Kadison-Singer problem and on Ramanujan graphs. Srivastava from the University of California, Berkeley, Adam Marcus, the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Daniel Alan Spielman from Yale University will receive the 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize, the National Academy of Sciences said in the statement.

The prize consists of a medal and USD 1,00,000. Srivastava, Marcus and Spielman solved long-standing questions on the Kadison-Singer problem and on Ramanujan graphs, and in the process uncovered a deep new connection between linear algebra, geometry of polynomials, and graph theory that has inspired the next generation of theoretical computer scientists, it said.

They published new constructions of Ramanujan graphs, that describe sparse, but highly-connected networks, and a solution to what is known as the Kadison-Singer problem, a decades-old problem that asks whether unique information can be gleaned from a system in which only some of the features can be observed or measured, according to the Yale News. Srivastava is currently Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of California. Their groundbreaking papers on the questions, both published in 2015, solved problems that mathematicians had been working on for several decades, the National Academy of Sciences said.

Their proofs provided new tools to address numerous other problems, which have been embraced by other computer scientists seeking to apply the geometry of polynomials to solve discrete optimisation problems, the academy said. The Michael and Sheila Held Prize is presented annually and honours outstanding, innovative, creative, and influential research in the areas of combinatorial and discrete optimisation, or related parts of computer science, such as the design and analysis of algorithms and complexity theory.

The prize was established in 2017 by the bequest of Michael And Sheila Held.

Nobel Prize for Medicine awarded to three scientists for discovering hepatitis C virus

Nobel Prize for Medicine awarded to three scientists for discovering hepatitis C virus

Americans Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice, and British-born scientist Michael Houghton were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology on Monday for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus, a major source of liver disease that affects millions worldwide. Announcing the prize in Stockholm, the Nobel Committee noted that the trio’s work helped explain a major source of blood-borne hepatitis that couldn’t be explained by the previously discovered hepatitis A and B viruses. Their work, dating back to the 1970s and 1980s, has helped saved millions of lives, the committee said.

Image: AP

“Thanks to their discovery, highly sensitive blood tests for the virus are now available and these have essentially eliminated post-transfusion hepatitis in many parts of the world, greatly improving global health,” the committee said.

“Their discovery also allowed the rapid development of antiviral drugs directed at hepatitis C,” it added. “For the first time in history, the disease can now be cured, raising hopes of eradicating hepatitis C virus from the world population.”

The World Health Organization estimates there are over 70 million cases of hepatitis worldwide and 400,000 deaths each year. The disease is chronic and a major cause of liver inflammation and cancer.

The medicine prize carried particular significance this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has highlighted the importance that medical research has for societies and economies around the world.

Nobel Committee member Patrick Ernfors drew a parallel between this year’s prize and the current rush by millions of scientists around the world to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

“The first thing you need to do is to identify the causing virus,” he told reporters. “And once that has been done, that is in itself the starting point for development of drugs to treat the disease and also to develop vaccines against the disorder.”

“So the actual discovery, viral discovery itself is a critical moment,” said Enfors.

Alter was born in 1935 in New York and carried out his prize-winning studies at the U.S. National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, where he remains active, the commitee said.

Rice was born in 1952 in Sacramento, California. He worked on hepatitis at the Washington University in St. Louis and now works at Rockefeller University in New York.

Michael Houghton was born in Britain 1950 in the United Kingdom and did his studies at the Chiron Corporation in California before moving to the University of Alberta in Canada.

Thomas Perlmann, the Secretary-General of the Nobel Committee, said he managed to reach two of the winners, Alter and Rice.

“I had to call a couple of times before they answered,” he said. “They seemed very surprised and very, very happy.”

The prestigious Nobel award comes with a gold medal and prize money of 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1,118,000), courtesy of a bequest left 124 years ago by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.

The Nobel Committee often recognizes basic science that has laid the foundations for practical applications in common use today.

Monday’s mdecine award is the first of six prizes being announced through 12 October. The other prizes are for outstanding work in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics.

Google lawsuit for allegedly collecting data on users in incognito mode to continue

Google lawsuit for allegedly collecting data on users in incognito mode to continue

Google's motion to dismiss lawsuit accusing the search giant of tracking users, even while they were using incognito mode on Chrome browsers, has been rejected by a federal judge. As per the lawsuit, in some instances, Google Analytics or Google Ad Manager sent "a secrete, separate message to Google's servers in California." Google argues users were given enough information about how their activity is tracked in private browsing mode.

Google says that it has already made clear to its users that incognito mode does not mean 'invisible', and that their activity while using the mode on the browser may be visible to the websites they visit, and to the third-party analytics and ad services those website use.

Google has already said that it would remove so-called third party cookies from Chrome. Image: AP

“Incognito mode in Chrome gives you the choice to browse the internet without your activity being saved to your browser or device. As we clearly state each time you open a new incognito tab, websites might be able to collect information about your browsing activity during your session,” Google spokesman, Jose Castaneda said when the lawsuit was filed last year.

The federal judge says that the lawsuit will continue because Google can not prove that users "expressly consented" to being aware of the tracking on incognito mode.

The lawsuit largely focuses on what Google does to collect and track online activity when users surf the web in private browsing mode. Even when a user surfs in incognito mode, Google uses other tracking tools it provides to website publishers and advertisers to keep tabs on what websites the user visits.

The class action lawsuit was filed in June 2020 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of three people with Google accounts: Chasom Brown and Maria Nguyen, both of Los Angeles, and William Byatt, a Florida resident.

Tesla buys $1.5 billion in Bitcoin, will soon let customers make payment in the digital currency

Tesla buys $1.5 billion in Bitcoin, will soon let customers make payment in the digital currency

Holders of Bitcoin may be able to cash in some of their investment in the digital currency for a brand new electric car. Electric automaker Tesla said Monday that it has invested around $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and it plans to begin accepting the digital currency as payment for its high-end vehicles soon. The price of Bitcoin soared 15.4 percent to around $44,500 Monday in reaction to Tesla’s announcement, according to CoinBase.

The California-based electric car maker headed by Elon Musk revealed the new strategy in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, saying its investment in digital currency and other “alternative reserve assets” may grow.

Bitcoin has drawn enthusiasts for its scarcity and security, but the volatile digital currency still is not widely used to pay for goods and services. It’s mostly been a store of value, like gold, with some limited merchants like Overstock accepting bitcoin for payment. It’s also used by those distrustful of the banking system or criminals seeking to launder money.

Whether other major companies will follow Tesla’s lead in investing in Bitcoin or accepting it for transactions is unclear. A vehicle is a large purchase, which could make Bitcoin a better fit to pay for it, but the wild price swings in Bitcoin could be a significant risk to any merchant who decided to accept it.

“It was wise of Tesla to announce that it will deem its investment in Bitcoin as an “alternative asset.” That is certainly appropriate, because Bitcoin might be coming into greater acceptance as currency, but it is not cash,” said Anthony Michael Sabino, a professor of law, at St John’s University.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk's Image: AP Image; Creative: tech2/Nandini Yadav

Tesla said last month that it had cash and cash equivalents of $19.4 billion after selling new shares to take advantage of a rising stock price. Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities said the move gives Tesla “more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on its cash.”

Tesla is in a unique position to accept digital currencies for payment, since the automaker does not rely on a network of independently owned dealerships to sell its vehicles unlike traditional car companies such as General Motors and Ford.

“It certainly seems that beyond embracing it as a store of value for his own trust or his own assets, it does appear that (Musk is) embracing it as a transactional tool as well,” said Michael Venuto, co-portfolio manager of the Amplify Transformational Data Sharing fund, an exchange-traded fund that tries to invest in digital currency technologies.

(Also read: After GameStop, the rise of Dogecoin shows us how memes can move markets)

Venuto’s fund holds a small amount of Bitcoin but mostly invests in companies that build around such technologies.

Even with Tesla’s support, it could take some time before those who’ve made money investing in Bitcoin to use it to buy a car.

Jessica Caldwell, executive director of insights at Edmunds.com, doesn’t expect it to become commonplace because most people take loans to buy their vehicles or lease them and don’t pay in cash, said Plus, most people at present would not be comfortable taking a risk with cryptocurrency on such an expensive purchase, she said.

Other experts say it’s just a matter of time before Bitcoin finds more widespread use in transactions.

“I think the trend is inexorable,” said Richard Lyons, a finance professor at the University of California at Berkeley, predicting Bitcoin and other digital currencies “will become transactional currencies increasingly over the next five years. It’s not going to happen overnight.”

(Also read: Dogecoin value surges as Elon Musk breaks his Twitter silence with a tweet endorsing the cryptocurrency)

Whether Tesla will get a definitive competitive advantage in accepting Bitcoin remains to be seen. The automaker could be simply investing in Bitcoin because Musk has been known to have eclectic tastes. Musk launched a Tesla car into space to demonstrate the payload capabilities of his SpaceX company rockets.

Similar to Tesla, Virginia-based MicroStrategy Inc. announced in August that it would use some of the excess cash on its balance sheet to invest in alternative assets such as Bitcoin. The move has paid off so far. As of 2 February, the business analytics company said it held 71,079 Bitcoins that it purchased for an aggregate price of $1.15 billion since last summer. Using a value of $44,500, those bitcoins are worth $3.16 billion.

MicroStrategy shares have risen 660 percent since the August announcement, but the shares are susceptible to swings in the price of Bitcoin. They closed up 29 percent Monday at $1,041.

Palo Alto-based Tesla reported its first annual net profit in 2020, and its stock soared to make it the world’s most valuable automaker. Tesla joined the S&P 500 late last year and at a value of $824 billion makes up about 2 percent of the benchmark index. So, funds that track the S&P 500 now have some exposure to Bitcoin, however small that may be.

Apple vs Epic trial: Apple CEO Tim Cook to testify this week as the trial nears end

Apple vs Epic trial: Apple CEO Tim Cook to testify this week as the trial nears end

Apple CEO Tim Cook will take the witness stand this Friday in a high-stakes courtroom battle over the lucrative commissions the iPhone maker has been raking in from its mobile app store. The timing of Cook’s highly anticipated testimony was confirmed Wednesday when a federal judge granted Apple’s request to allow the 60-year-old executive to be the first witness sworn in Friday morning during a trial that has been unfolding in an Oakland, California, courtroom since the beginning of this month.

The trial revolves around an antitrust lawsuit filed last year by Epic Games, the maker of the popular video game Fortnite.

Epic is trying prove that commissions ranging from 15 percent to 30 percent on transactions in apps installed on iPhones, iPads and iPods are part of a monopoly that Apple has created around a fortress blocking other payment options on its mobile devices.

Apple has brushed off the allegations as a desperate attempt by Epic to boost its own profits by breaching a contract covering a system that requires a small portion of the 1.8 million apps in its store to pay the commissions on transactions. Apple says the commissions help it pay for the technology powering its products, including the security and privacy protections that has helped make iPhone so popular.

Cook will be taking the stand as Apple prepares to wrap its case before the two sides make their closing arguments and answer US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers’ questions about the evidence on Monday. His appearance also will serve as a sort of bookend to the testimony of Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, who took the stand for two days during the first two days of trial.

(Also read: Apple vs Epic trial: Tim Sweeney acknowledges that Epic brazenly violated contract with Apple to make a point)

The CEOs’ testimony could be a study in contrasts. Cook has emerged as a polished, confident public speaker since inheriting his CEO job nearly a decade ago from Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs. But Sweeney is far more soft spoken, and often had to be asked to speak up during his testimony that at times included statements that seemed to bolster Apple’s defense.

(Also read: Apple vs Epic Games trial: Slide presentation review shows App Store has generated $2.1 billion in billings)

Cook will also have the advantage of listening to how Epic’s lawyers have been grilling Apple executives who have been taking the stand. That list has included Phil Schiller, Apple’s former marketing guru and a Jobs confidant who was on the stand Monday and Tuesday. Apple’s software chief, Craig Federighi, took the stand Wednesday to discuss the various ways the company insulates its products from hackers.

The specter of Jobs is likely to be raised while Cook is on the stand, based on Epic’s strategy in the so far. Epic lawyers have repeatedly referred back to Jobs’ initial predictions that Apple wouldn’t make much money from the app store when he unveiled it 13 years ago.

(Also read: Apple vs Epic Games in court: A trial that could alter App Store future and forever change how apps work)

Since then, the app store has become more successful than anyone envisioned and a major contributor to the profit growth that has helped give Apple its current market value of nearly $2.1 trillion. Just how much money Apple makes from the app store has remained a heated point of contention during the trial, although Schiller conceded during his testimony that the Cupertino, California, had pocketed at least $20 billion from it through June 2017, based on calculations from figures publicly released as that time.

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit Continues – Bobby Kotick Writes Open Letter to Staff

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit Continues – Bobby Kotick Writes Open Letter to Staff

Let's be honest; it's no secret how I feel about Activision Blizzard. The company is currently a blight on the face of the earth, having consistently mistreated employees for so long, even my coverage over the past year (rounded up in my piece over consumer backlash to the lawsuit in World of Warcraft) barely scratches the surface. Still, I'm not going to repeat all of the details here; I'll give a quick recap.

That quick recap is as follows:

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit: The Bobby Kotick Open Letter

I'm not going to copy out the whole letter here. You can find it by clicking through this link, which will allow you to see the one-page letter from Bobby Kotick to all employees of Activision Blizzard. Anybody who has seen the many issues of sexual discrimination, sexual harassment, and rape within the games industry over the previous few years will be aware of the response by now.

There's a conciliatory statement of being tone-deaf in the initial response. There's a claim that the company will do more, that they will act. They also claim there's no place for discrimination, harassment, or unequal treatment at the company, despite facts proving otherwise. It's run of the mill; it reads like an emotionless rag because of how "lawyered" the letter is, and that's because the letter is just that - another legal move.

As for the five actions Bobby Kotick states the company will take, they are below:

  • Employee Support. We will continue to investigate each and every claim and will not hesitate to take decisive action. To strengthen our capabilities in this area we are adding additional senior staff and other resources to both the Compliance team and the Employee Relations team.
  • Listening Sessions. We know many of you have inspired ideas on how to improve our culture. We will be creating safe spaces, moderated by third parties, for you to speak out and share areas for improvement.
  • Personnel Changes. We are immediately evaluating managers and leaders across the Company. Anyone found to have impeded the integrity of our processes for evaluating claims and imposing appropriate consequences will be terminated.
  • Hiring Practices. Earlier this year I sent an email requiring all hiring managers to ensure they have diverse candidate slates for all open positions. We will be adding compliance resources to ensure that our hiring managers are in fact adhering to this directive.
  • In-game Changes. We have heard the input from employee and player communities that some of our in-game content is inappropriate. We are removing that content

Needless to say, specific demands of employees aren't being met, one example being the demand for an end to arbitration clauses in contracts that actively prevent employees from coming forward.

In the response letter, Activision Blizzard's lawyers Bobby Kotick states that the initial response was tone-deaf. Yes, it was. However, in my opinion, the response is still tone-deaf because that response to the lawsuit stands. Activision Blizzard is, legally and officially, still denying these allegations. Until they are willing to come together with California's DFEH and work on a settlement to the lawsuit, the response is still that these allegations are "distorted" and "false".

As for the company's employees, if this doesn't show the need for unionisation within the games industry, nothing will. Collective action has brought Activision Blizzard, one of the biggest games companies in the world, to the table. Unionise, fight for each other and not only will this help get rid of the sexual abusers within the industry, but it will also help protect your employment rights in the future.

2021 should be the year humanity stops it war on nature pleads UN Sec-Gen Antonio Guterres

2021 should be the year humanity stops it war on nature pleads UN Sec-Gen Antonio Guterres

As an extreme year for hurricanes, wildfires and heat waves comes to an end, the head of the United Nations challenged world leaders to make 2021 the year that humanity ends its “war on nature” and commits to a future free of planet-warming carbon pollution.

With new reports highlighting 2020’s record-breaking weather and growing fossil fuels extraction that triggers global warming, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered yet another urgent appeal to curb climate change. It was tinged with optimism but delivered dire warnings, as the UN gears up for a 12 December virtual climate summit in France on the fifth anniversary of the landmark 2015 Paris climate agreement.

“The state of the planet is broken,” Guterres said in a speech at Columbia University. “Humanity is waging war on nature. This is suicidal.”

“Apocalyptic fires and floods, cyclones and hurricanes are increasingly the new normal,” he said.

Firefighters dig trenches in a effort to stop the advancement of a forest fire in Hualañe, a Chilean community in 2017. AP

In a report, the World Meteorological Organization said this year is set to end about 1.2 degrees Celsius (2.2 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the last half of the 1800s, which scientists use as a baseline for warming caused by heat-trapping gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas. Most trapped heat goes into the world’s seas, and ocean temperatures now are at record levels. It also means 2020 will go down as one of the three hottest years on record.

“There is at least a one-in-five chance of it temporarily exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2024,” WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said. The Paris climate accord set a goal of not exceeding 1.5-degree (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warming since pre-industrial times.

A new analysis by Climate Action Tracker scientists who monitor carbon pollution and pledges to cut them said public commitments to emission cuts, if kept, would limit warming to about 2.6 degrees Celsius (4.7 degrees Fahrenheit) and possibly as low as 2.1 degrees Celsius.

Guterres saw hope in promises by more than 100 countries that by mid-century they will not be adding more heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere than trees and technology can remove, along with shorter term pollution cuts. China and U.S. President-elect Joe Biden have pledged net zero carbon emissions.

“I firmly believe that 2021 can be a new kind of leap year — the year of a quantum leap towards carbon neutrality,” Guterres said.

But he said the two UN reports Wednesday “spell out how close we are to climate catastrophe.”

When countries spend trillions of dollars to recover from the pandemic-triggered economic slowdown, Guterres said they must to do so in a way that emphasizes clean energy.

Nations should stop funding and subsidizing fossil fuels, he said. And countries need to fulfill their Paris promise to spend $100 billion annually to help poorer countries develop cleaner energy.

Guterres said there’s no way the world can curb the climate change “without U.S. leadership” and urged students and other Americans to do “everything you can” to get their governments to curb emissions more quickly.

One of the new reports found countries would need to cut production of oil, coal and natural gas by 6% each year by 2030 to keep global temperatures from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Instead, a review of eight major fossil-fuel producing nations showed they plan to increase production by 2% annually. That means twice the amount of carbon-based fuel would come onto the market than feasible to keep the Paris goal within reach.

Governments in the Group of 20 major and emerging economies have so far committed more money to prop up fossil fuel sectors than to boost the rollout of renewable energy, the report found.

Co-author Ivetta Gerasimchuk of the International Institute for Sustainable Development said investing in oil, coal and gas no longer makes economic sense because renewable energy is becoming cheaper than fossil fuels. But, she said, “We see that instead of governments letting these fossil fuel projects die they resurrect them from the dead.”

The WMO’s report found global warming is worsening in all seven key climate indicators, but the problem is increasing human suffering in an already bad year.

“In 2020, over 50 million people have been doubly hit: by climate-related disasters (floods, droughts and storms) and the COVID-19 pandemic,” the report said. ”Countries in Central America are suffering from the triple-impact of hurricanes Eta and Iota, COVID-19 and pre-existing humanitarian crises.”

Among the dozens of extremes the report highlighted:

-- A record 30 Atlantic named tropical storms and hurricanes.

--Death Valley, California, hit 129.9 degrees (54.4 degrees Celsius), the hottest the world has seen in 80 years.

--Record wildfires struck California and Colorado in the western United States, following a major fire season and record heat in Australia.

--The Arctic had record wildfires and a prolonged heat wave culminating in a 100-degree mark (38 degrees Celsius) in Siberia in June.

--Record low Arctic sea ice was reported for April and August and the yearly minimum, in September, was the second lowest on record.

--More than 2,000 people died in record summer rains and flooding in Pakistan and surrounding nations.

While these events can’t solely be blamed on climate change, “these are the types of events scientists fear will increase due to climate change,” said Cornell University climate scientist Natalie Mahowald, who wasn’t part of the report.

“Human activities are at the root of our descent towards chaos,” Guterres said. “But that means human action can solve it.”

Elon Musk Rings The Warning Bells For Lucid Group & Rivian

Elon Musk Rings The Warning Bells For Lucid Group & Rivian

Tesla

Palo Alto, California-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Inc's chief executive officer Mr. Elon Musk has expressed confusion at the soaring valuations of new entrants into the space. Tesla, the first American company to manufacture and sell electric vehicles capable of exceeding 200 miles in traveling range, is now playing in a market where other companies plan to launch their products. One company that has caught consumer interest is another Californian company, now referred to as Lucid Group who plans to deliver its luxury Lucid Air electric sedan to its customers this month.

Elon Musk Expresses Confusion At Soaring Valuations Of Lucid Group and Rivian Automotive

Musk made his latest comments on the soaring valuations of Lucid and Rivian on the social media platform Twitter. He responded to a tweet comparing the valuation of Tesla when it went public with the ones the other two have secured far. This data was presented alongside deliveries made by the three companies, and it revealed that while Tesla had delivered 1,400 vehicles when it went public, the others are yet to make a single one.

The current state of the electric vehicle industry is significantly different from when Tesla decided to sell its shares to the general public. This change, which is mostly due to Tesla's success, has resulted in strong retail and institutional investor enthusiasm for the sector, and it is this change that Mr. Musk described as "strange."

After Tesla was incorporated in 2004, Musk joined the company less than a year later when he invested $6.5 million in the company and became its board chairman. He would then become Tesla's chief executive, a role that allowed him to oversee the company's daily operations directly, soon after Tesla's earliest co-founders Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard, departed from the company.

An image tweeted by Twitter user @WR4NYGov comparing the delivery and valuations of Tesla, Rivian and Lucid when they went public. Note: Rivian is yet to sell its shares publicly, but it has disclosed a valuation of $80 billion. Image: @WR4NYGov/Twitter

The executive's initial response to the image tweeted (shown above) simply stated that:

These are strange days

11:05 PM · Oct 14, 2021·Twitter for iPhone

He then wondered whether it was possible in the current environment for a company to market itself as developing electric vehicles and secure a valuation lesser than $1 billion without making any deliveries.

Musk's remarks in this aspect were as follows:

If it possible to start an EV company without shipping any cars & get a valuation less than a billion dollars!?

11:22 PM · Oct 14, 2021·Twitter for iPhone

Musk, who has shared his struggles with executing mass production several times, added a cautionary note for new entrants into the electric vehicle market. Prior to wondering about valuations, he cautioned them to be wary of the worries that accompany scaling up a new company's operations in several business areas.

According to him:

I hope they have a high pain tolerance. Scaling production, supply chain, logistics & service is a world of hurt.

Lucid Group's Lucid Air luxury electric vehicle is the talk of the town. Image: Andrew Krok/Roadshow

Since Tesla started selling the Roadster in 2008, the industry has significantly grown, and Lucid Group's Lucid Air is a vehicle that has impressed investors and reviewers alike. The Air has an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated range of up to 520 miles (for the higher end variants), and reflecting its luxurious nature, the vehicle has a starting price exceeding $70,000.

Rivian, on the other hand, focuses on sports utility vehicles (SUVs), pickup trucks and delivery vans. The company's vans have already received an order from retail giant Amazon, and it kicked off production of its R1T pickup truck in September this year.

On the other hand, Tesla delivered roughly a quarter of a million vehicles in the third quarter of this year, representing roughly half of the company's deliveries made during 2020. Its success with a manufacturing facility in China injected fresh optimism into the company, which investors rewarded via a meteoric rise in share price. Since the start of 2020, Tesla's share price has grown by an astounding 880%, and since its initial public offering, the shares have appreciated by an eye-popping 21,853% based on closing prices this Friday for a market value of $834 billion.

Diablo II: Resurrected is Blizzard’s Latest Launch Disaster, Some Issue Workarounds Offered

Diablo II: Resurrected is Blizzard’s Latest Launch Disaster, Some Issue Workarounds Offered

Diablo II Resurrected

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before – Blizzard had launched a new remaster of one of their classic games and yet server issues and other problems have rendered the game nearly unplayable. Diablo II: Resurrected arrived yesterday, and players have been beset with issues, ranging from being locked out of the game, to characters losing progress or disappearing altogether, particularly if you’re playing offline.

Blizzard promises they’re working on the server issues and manually unlocking characters, but no actual patch has been offered yet, and players continue to report widespread issues. In a post on the Blizzard forums, the studio promises they’re working on an array of issues.

Some players have reported offline characters disappearing or losing progress, and we believe we have identified the issue. We intend to release a permanent fix for this today for PC and for consoles shortly thereafter.

Furthermore, our team is working to resolve the issue of character lockouts. Many of these characters are already in the process of being unlocked. We anticipate this process will take a few hours to complete.

For players unable to create or join game lobbies, we’ve been evaluating activities that have prevented them from being able to play in those sessions. We’re actively working to find a solution to these issues. Additionally, our team has been monitoring players’ uptime across the globe. We’ve been reviewing crash reports across all platforms as we work to make Diablo II: Resurrected as stable as possible. On top of this, we’re exploring the AVX issue, preventing players from launching the game. As we progress, we’ll provide an update if we receive a development on this front.

While we wait for an actual update for the issue of disappearing characters, Blizzard suggests using different names for online and offline characters

We’ve been working on players’ reports of offline characters disappearing or losing progress after creation. We identified the issue and are implementing a fix to prevent this from happening again. For the time being, we advise you not to use the same name for your offline characters and online characters, since that is related to this bug.

Diablo II: Resurrected seemed like it could provide a small glint of light after weeks of very gloomy PR for Blizzard. The fact that they’ve dropped the ball on yet another retro release, following the disaster that was Warcraft III: Reforged, is kind of astonishing. Did they not realize they needed to get this thing right?

California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) has filed suit against Activision Blizzard, alleging widespread gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment at the Call of Duty publisher. You can get more detail on that unfolding story here.

Diablo II: Resurrected is available now on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and Switch. Good luck trying to actually play it!

Twenty-two of the world's more polluted cities are in India, IQAir quality report

Twenty-two of the world's more polluted cities are in India, IQAir quality report

Deadly small particle pollution in dozens of nations exceeded World Health Organization recommendations last year despite Covid lockdowns, according to a report released Tuesday. The partial or complete shutdown of transport and industry for months at a time in 2020 reduced average levels of so-called PM2.5 pollution across the world, including in major cities, the IQAir quality report found. Concentrations of the life-shortening particles — cast off by traffic pollution and burning fossil fuels — dropped 11 percent in Beijing, 13 percent in Chicago, 15 percent in New Delhi, 16 percent in London, and 16 percent in Seoul.

At least 60 percent of India's cities were more breathable last year than in 2019, and all of them had cleaner air than in 2018.

"Many parts of the world experienced unprecedented — but short-lived — improvements in air quality in 2020," said Lauri Myllyvirta, lead analyst at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) and co-author of the report. "This meant tens of thousands of avoided deaths from air pollution."

But only 24 of 106 countries monitored met WHO safety guidelines, said the report, based on the world's largest database of ground-level air pollution measurements.

China and many South Asian nations experienced PM2.5 pollution several time greater than WHO recommended thresholds, and in some regions the concentration was six to eight times higher.

Twenty-two of the world's more polluted cities are in India.

Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Mongolia and Afghanistan topped the 2020 ranking, with average annual PM2.5 concentrations between 77 and 47 microgrammes per cubic metre (mcg/m3) of air.

Deep into the lungs

The UN says PM2.5 density should not top 25 mcg/m3 in any 24-hour period, or 10 mcg/m3 averaged across an entire year.

The most polluted capital cities in the world last year were New Delhi (84 mcg/m3) and Dhaka (77), with Jakarta, Kathmandu, Islamabad, Hanoi and Beijing all in the top 20.

About half of all European cities exceed WHO's suggested limits.

Air pollution levels were made worse in 2020 — tied for the hottest year on record — by climate change, the report noted.

Wildfires fuelled by scorching heatwaves led to extremely high pollution levels in California, South America and Australia.

Data from the first few months show PM2.5 pollution returning to pre-pandemic levels.

The European Space Agency (ESA) reported Monday that concentrations of another health-damaging air pollutant that dipped in 2020, nitrogen oxide (NO2), has also rebounded and, in some parts of the world, is on the rise.

After dropping, for example, about 40 percent last February in Chinese megacities Beijing and Chongqing, NO2 levels shot back up last month to 2019 in Beijing, and nearly double from 2019 levels in Chongqing.

"We expected air pollution to rebound as lockdowns are lifted across the globe," Claus Zehner, ESA's mission manager for the Copernicus Sentinel-5P Earth monitoring satellite, said in a statement. "In the coming weeks and months, we expect increases of nitrogen dioxide concentrations also over Europe."

Air pollution shortens lives worldwide by nearly three years on average, and causes more than eight million premature deaths annually, earlier studies have found.

The WHO calculates 4.2 million deaths from outdoor air pollution but has underestimated the impact on cardiovascular disease, recent research has shown.

The average lifespan is cut 4.1 years in China, 3.9 years in India, and 3.8 years in Pakistan. In Europe, life expectancy is shortened by eight months.

PM2.5 particles penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. In 2013, the WHO classified it as a cancer-causing agent. Compared to other causes of premature death, air pollution worldwide kills 19 times more people each year than malaria, nine times more than HIV/AIDS, and three times more than alcohol.

Nikola A “Pure” Zero Emissions Investment States Deutsche With A $54 Price Target

Nikola A “Pure” Zero Emissions Investment States Deutsche With A $54 Price Target

Nikola

Electric vehicle designer Nikola Corporation (NASDAQ:NKLA) has been in the limelight these past few months as it opened orders for its Badger truck and provided new details about its other products. Nikola, which does not have a product available for sale to the public, is known for sporadic highs and lown on the stock market – as traders and investors speculate about the company's future.

Now, Deutsche Bank has initiated coverage of the company and set a $54/share price target for the company. The company currently has several products on its portfolio, ranging from semi-trucks to pickup trucks and it intends to start selling these products in 2021 and scale these up over the course of the following years.

Nikola Price Target Mirrors Company's Closing Price Yesterday As Analyst Estimates 15,000 Truck Shipments In 2025

The Deutsche analyst responsible for the bank's Nikola coverage is Emmanuel Rosner and he's out with a new note that sounds cautiously optimistic. Rosner believes that for those investors who wish to fund the commercial emissions-free truck revolution, Nikola is an excellent stock to put their money in. Additionally, the analyst also provides a 'Hold' rating for the stock as he recommends current investors and traders that are holding the stock to maintain their $NKLA holdings.

Nikola can potentially ship 15,000 vehicles by the end of 2020 believes the Deutsche analyst, in order to generate $4.6 billion in revenue and $546 million in earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation (EBITDA) for an EBITDA (operating profit) margin of 11.8%. Nikola's own investor presentation released at the end of this year's first calendar quarter pegs the company to ship 12.000 vehicles in North America at the end of 2024 to rake in $3.2 billion in revenue and eke out $145 million worth of EBITDA for a 6.6% EBITDA margin.

Deutsche's revenue estimates appear to be for global sales and therefore it isn't pertinent to compare them with Nikola's own figures for 2024. However, what is concerning is the operating margin cited by the bank which is nearly double of what Nikola expects for itself in North America in 2024.

Slide 31 from Nikola Corporation's investor presentation released in March shows the company's revenue estimates. (Image Credit: Nikola Corporation)

Rosner also accepts market concerns about Nikola being unable to deliver a product so far as he states that while the company's Enterprise Value-to-Sales (EV/Sales) ratio is similar to Tesla and NIO, the facts that Nikola is yet to manufacture a single product or operate a manufacturing facility leaves the company with a "large execution risk".

For its part, Nikola plans to officially open a manufacturing facility in Arizona later this month and the company has already commenced orders for its Badger pickup truck – a move that proved controversial when Nikola's founder Trevor Milton failed to disclose the actual number of pre-orders sold and the move send the company's share price in a downward spiral during open market trading at the very start of this month.

As the company he helped create is piquing public interest, Mr. Milton himself has started to attract his fair share of controversy. The founder, who currently serves as Nikola's executive chairman, is regularly lambasted by his critics who claim that his knowledge of technological principles required for building complex products such as those that Nikola makes is rudimentary at best.

The executive has countered these claims by stating that he prefers to gain hands-on knowledge instead of theoretical, book-based knowledge that is imparted to college students. Like the Palo Alto, California-based electric vehicle and renewable energy products manufacturer Tesla Inc's chief executive officer Mr. Elon Musk, Mr. Milton has also taken investors betting against his company (termed 'short-sellers') publicly to task on social media platform Twitter.

But while Mr. Musk's Tesla basks in Wall Street's optimistic attention on the back of a surprising vehicle delivery beat, Nikola's future is uncertain as noted by the Deutsche analyst in his note. He also believes that the company's current share price is reflective of its medium-term revenue opportunity and does not discount the risks inherent to it due to a lack of products and manufacturing facilities.

Apple says that exposure to motorcycle vibrations can 'degrade' iPhone camera performance

Apple says that exposure to motorcycle vibrations can 'degrade' iPhone camera performance

Apple has announced on its Apple Support forum that motorcycle's high-powered engines can "degrade" the camera performance of an iPhone. The tech giant advises to "avoid exposing your iPhone to extended high-amplitude vibrations". Apple further reveals that small-volume or electric engines, such as mopeds and scooters, may lead to comparatively lower-amplitude vibrations, hence, will not affect the iPhone camera as much.

Apple XS Max

According to Apple, when users place the iPhones on a bike's handlebar or chassis, these vibrations get transmitted degrading the image and video quality. These vibrations affect the optical image stabilisation (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus of the camera. In fact, "long-term direct exposure to high-amplitude vibrations within certain frequency ranges may degrade the performance of these systems and lead to reduced image quality for photos and videos."

Apple explains, "If you accidentally move a camera when you take a picture, the resulting image can be blurry. To prevent this, some iPhone models have optical image stabilisation (OIS). OIS lets you take sharp photos even if you accidentally move the camera. With OIS, a gyroscope senses that the camera moved. To reduce image motion, and the resulting blur, the lens moves according to the angle of the gyroscope.

Additionally, some iPhone models have closed-loop autofocus (AF).2 Closed-loop AF resists the effects of gravity and vibration to preserve sharp focus in stills, videos, and panoramas. With closed-loop AF, on-board magnetic sensors measure gravity and vibration effects and determine the lens position so that the compensating motion can be set accurately."

OIS technology is available on iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 7 and later including iPhone SE (2nd generation). On the other hand, closed-loop AF is available on iPhone XS and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation).

Notably, Apple is all set to host its "California Streaming" launch event on 14 September where it is expected to launch the new iPhone 13 series, Apple Watch Series 7 and AirPods 3.

Apple Customers Recycle More Devices Than Buyers of Other Brands

Apple Customers Recycle More Devices Than Buyers of Other Brands

Apple fans have long considered themselves some of the most discerning consumers in tech. But according to a report by United States phone and tech buyback site, SoftCell, they have another claim they can accurately make as well: That they are more active when it comes to recycling electronics waste.

As per the study, Apple owners lead the way when it comes to recycling e-waste---recycling 13.8% more devices than Samsung users. They also blow away the total recycling figures of other brands including LG, Google, Motorola, OnePlus, and more.

Apple's Commitment to Recycling

In total, Apple devices make up more than 47.7% of recycled gadgets. Samsung devices, by comparison, make up 33.9%.

SoftCell reportedly gathered the data over a period of two years. What's not clear is the exact methodology used. The information is reportedly gathered from, "analyzing hundreds of thousands of consumers data during that time."

But it doesn't necessarily explain how it accounts for the number of recycled products as a percentage of the total devices sold. Since Apple has long stopped breaking down unit sales of its iPhones, let alone other products it sells smaller quantities of, at best this could be reliant only on other analyst figures. That makes it tough to prove that Apple fans are better recyclers on average, so much as that they collectively recycle more devices.

Nonetheless, it's a data point Apple execs would likely be cheered to hear about. Particularly under the leadership of current CEO Tim Cook, Apple has been very proactive about sustainability and the environment.

This is seen in everything from the company's commitment to alternative energy sources powering its Apple Stores, offices, and, increasingly, supply chain, to its recent decision to stop packaging EarPods and a wall charger with the iPhone.

Right to Recycle?

Interestingly, the study breaks down other recycling stats, too. One of these is that California, Apple's home state, has the best record for recycling tech--with 20.5% of recyclers being located in the western US state.

The slight irony when it comes to Apple recycling, of course, is that the company's products are notoriously tough to repair. Right-to-repair activists and proponents have long taken exception to the way that Apple makes it difficult for users to fix devices when they've been busted. That, in turn, contributes to the e-waste problem.

To be fair to Apple, this isn't something the Cupertino company is guilty of in isolation. Many manufacturers make devices that aren't easy to repair, meaning that users wind up ditching old devices and buying shiny new ones instead.

As a leader in the industry in all sorts of ways, that's something Apple could work to improve in the future.
