Mental coaching app Meditopia secures $15 million in funding

Meditopia, the mental coaching app, has just secured $15 million in a Series A funding round led by venture capital firm Creandum.

Based in Istanbul and Berlin, Meditopia seeks to address mental health challenges globally by offering tailored and localised long-term programmes.

This is what makes the app special: it provides mental health across non-English speaking regions to address existing app’s shortcoming when it comes to cultural and language diversity.

The app works with professionals across 75 regions to provide tailored plans for those suffering from a wide range of mental health issues.

“Our mental wellbeing is deeply rooted in our culture and the events happening around us, the way we speak, people we interact with, the community we live in, politics and so on,” explained Meditopia co-Founder Berk Yilmaz. “These are the main factors that affect our peace. Therefore mental wellness needs to be handled locally, personalized to our local needs and culture.”

Around 3,000 pieces of content have gone up in 10 different language on the app since it launched in 2017.

Among its pool of professionals are therapists, psychologists, meditation experts and writers from different regions.

“From the beginning, Meditopia has strived to be at the frontier of the mind, taking a unique and customised approach to every country, culture, and language that it serves. Sources of stress and anxiety may be universal, however the way they are discussed and perceived is often very specific to each culture, country, or language,” said Fatih Celebi, the co-founder of Meditopia.

“We don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution to mental health and with Meditopia we’re helping to provide for the long-term deeply personal, complex needs of people across the globe.”

The launch comes at a time when meditation apps saw a 25% surge in downloads following COVID-19 related lockdowns.

Meditation is a particularly popular way to relieve anxiety and stress.

“The coronavirus pandemic has thrown mental health into stark view but there has been a mental health crisis bubbling under the surface for decades. For too long, the technology available was created for English-speaking groups alone. Meditopia provides the alternative; a solution that helps its members get to the heart of what they need in a way that suits them. We’re thrilled to be a part of getting this vital service to those people,” added Fergal Mullen, Founding Partner at Highland Europe.
