Snapchat tests TikTok-inspired vertical swipe

Snapchat is reportedly testing a function that lets users vertically swipe through its public content.

If that sounds familiar then that is because rival TikTok already provides a similar experience whereby users swipe from video to video.

According to Snapchat, the feature is being tested as part of a roll-out of various visual formats that are visible publicly on the app.

Users can discover new content via the Discover section in the app. Instead of moving between Stories via a tapping motion, users may soon be able to swipe horizontally.

TikTok and Snapchat share a similar audience in terms of age group (mostly Gen Z). As such it may make sense to unify the experience between the apps.

Users who are regularly swiping between videos on TikTok thus may find it easier to use the same gesture to advance between content on Snapchat.

Snapchat declined an offer for further information from TechCrunch.

In terms of timing, Snap Inc appears to be following in Facebook’s footsteps by bolstering its TikTok-inspired features as India exercised a ban on the video app and the USA is likely to follow.

It also demonstrates just how influential TikTok has become as a social media app.
