Social and entertainment apps lead French-HQ’d chart for spending

Deezer, happn, and Yubo were the top performing apps by consumer spending that are headquartered in France during the second quarter of 2020, according to data by App Annie.

All three apps saw strong user growth in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Deezer’s five music apps have been downloaded over 274 million times now. It ranks among the top 100 Music category apps in the US.

The app reported a change in listening habits during COVID-19 related lockdowns. Instead of the usual 7am weekday peak, more users were tuning in around 9am or 10am in the morning. People also streamed music during weekend afternoons more, which Deezer admits was unseen before.

“Home isolation means that people have to adapt to a totally new life. You have to keep your kids entertained, make sure to stay fit and still balance work and personal time. Our data shows us how people are adapting. Home devices are taking up the job of streaming audio. Peak streaming now happens one to two hours later than our normal morning time. And the difference between weekends and weekdays is more or less gone – every day looks like Sunday now,” said Chief Data & Research Officer at Deezer, Aurélien Hérault.

Meanwhile, French dating app happn which uses geo-location data to connect people close by also saw user numbers spike. To date, the app has some 91 million registered users in 17 countries and ranks among the leading 300 lifestyle apps in the US in terms of downloads.

According to a survey by happn, 70% of its users felt that COVID-19 had a serious affect on their approach to dating with 30% spending more time on dating apps.

The vast majority (93%) were open to try new ways of dating including increased messaging and Facetiming.

French-made Yubo is a social platform created for teenagers, which boasted strong user growth due to COVID-19. At the start of 2020, the app saw some 10,000 new daily sign-ups that jumped to 30,000 in April.

The company noted a 50% rise in daily active user activities.
