When it comes to mobile shopping, it’s not difficult to see why COVID-19 lockdowns would have resulted in a spike in shopping app downloads.
With more people than ever before locked into their homes, online orders and home deliveries have peaked.
Now, new data from App Annie has revealed the top 10 North American shopping apps during Q2 2020 by monthly active user growth.
Similar to the UK, Amazon ranked top, followed by Walmart and Wish. Other popular apps which saw usage spike included Shop, Target, Instacart, Wayfair, the Home Deport, Lowe’s and Etsy.
Amazon posted its largest ever profits due to the COVID-19 surge which saw its shares skyrocket by 5%.
Revenues grew 40% to around $89 billion.
Much of this growth was driven by spiking online grocery sales, but video streaming hours also doubled.
Commenting on Amazon’s advertising sales, Aaron Goldman, CMO at 4C Insights said:
“By beating analyst expectations on both the top and bottom line in Q2, Amazon showed the true strength of its business model. From a marketing standpoint, Amazon Advertising is a must-buy for any brand active on the platform. The ability to be present at the point of purchase and tie ad spend directly to sales is the holy grail for marketers. As we look out into the future, it’s clear the role of Amazon is only going to grow and brands will need to leverage closed ecosystems platforms that can optimize performance as part of an omnichannel strategy.”
Amazon also ranked among the top 20 most downloaded apps on the App Store for the second quarter of the year. It contributed to an overall rise of 40% in shopping downloads during Q2 2020 compared to the previous year.
More recently, the eCommerce giant announced that it would launch 30 Go stores in the UK after trials in the US. These stores do not have physical checkouts making the potentially more enticing for customers worried about the coronavirus.
