In an effort to boost transparency and user privacy, Google has added a feature that lets users gain more insights into adverts on the web app.
The web giant already provides an option for users to click on “Why this ad?” to find out more about the targeting behind an ad they see.
According to Google, the option is regularly seeing 15 million interactions per day.
It plans to add an option called ‘About this ad” over the coming months.
This will provide even more information including the names of the advertisers.
For now, the addition only works for display ads bought via Google Ads and Display & Video 360. By 2021, the company hopes to extend the transparency features to additional ad types and platforms.
At the same time, Google is installing a Chrome extension called Ads Transparency Spotlight that provides details of ads seen on the web.
In a blog post, the company added:
“Once these approaches have addressed the needs of users, publishers and advertisers, Chrome plans to phase out support for third-party cookies. These proposals are being actively discussed in forums like the W3C. Our ads team is actively contributing to this dialog—as we encourage any interested party to do—and we expect to incorporate the new solutions into our products in the years ahead.”
