Coronavirus-related lockdowns had a drastic effect on consumer shopping behaviours as shoppers found themselves unable or severely restricted to leave their homes.
This also meant that brick and mortar sellers had to adapt rapidly to meet the growing demand for online sales.
New data from App Annie revealed the top 10 retail apps in the UK during the second quarter 2020. It highlights that many of the top apps are the usual players, including Amazon, Wish and eBay.
Data aggregated by eMarketer showed that 68% of new eCommerce grocery shoppers said they would continue to shop online in the future.
At the same time, click-and collect sales are expected to rise 60% in the US as more consumers shop using their phones or laptops.
During the early stages of lockdowns, Amazon shoppers in the US bought predominantly groceries (26%), appliances (14%) and health and household (13%) goods, while Germans opened for toys (36%) and outdoor and sports goods (35%). In Italy, sports and outdoor gear ranked far ahead of ant other category (236%).
Meanwhile, eBay saw a swift increase in sellers joining the platform as independent sellers were forced to shut their locations. According to data from the auction platform, the rate of new sellers joining doubled in the UK since the start of the pandemic on a daily rate.
“Customers have had to move online to buy the products they need, but this has largely accelerated the shift we were already seeing,” said Rob Hattrell, UK VP at eBay.
“The sort of things people have been buying have reflected the way people’s lives have changed since lockdown, with stuff needed for home offices and home fitness equipment selling fast.”
It remains to be seen if initial growth rates can be maintained but with second wave fears looming, mCommerce is likely to experience further upticks and shopping apps will undoubtedly benefit from increasing downloads.
