If you think everyone likes social media, think again. One of third of British consumers wish that TikTok had never been invented.
That’s according to a survey of 2,000 UK adults by Uswitch.com that highlights just how much we dislike social networks.
Another 30% of participants said they wished Facebook had never been invented, followed by Twitter (27%) and Instagram (23%).
“Some social media sites are less about sharing news and more about showing off, which could explain why so many people wish that TikTok had never been invented,” explained Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com.
“It’s interesting to see that antipathy towards TikTok is not just the preserve of older generations, with 30 per cent of millennials also wishing that it had never been invented.”
What’s more, age was hardly a factor in how people rated their hatred, although the older generation (55 years plus) dislikes TikTok more than younger users.
The findings also revealed that users are spending more money on electronic gadgets at an average £8,500 per year per households compared to £3,400 in 2000.
The average number of gadgets per household now stands at 11 up from eight in 2000. Over half of households own a tablet computer (56%), while 53% have a smart TV.
“Household gadgets have come a long way since the year 2000, when mobile phones were a novelty and we were only just discovering the joys of the internet,” added Doku.
“It was a simpler time of Tamagotchis, Walkmans and the greatly missed Ceefax service, which would have celebrated its 46th anniversary on Wednesday. Now we can browse the web from the smartphones in our pocket and watch television or films on the go. It’s exciting to think what new technology we’ll be using in 20 years, although many of us will be hoping that certain social media sites are long extinct.”
Over half (67%) of Brits said that technology certainly made their lives easier while 78% admitted that it had helped them keep in touch with loved ones. But just 45% say it made the world a better place.
