Tado's "Care and Protect" Aims to Fix Your Heating Before It Breaks

Today, tado° announced Care and Protect, a new feature that will constantly monitor your heating system and let you know when an anomaly is detected, such as low water pressure.

According to tado°, 80 percent of consumers experience some kind of breakdown within their heating systems within two years. But 60 percent of those issues could be fixed or prevented by users themselves, without requiring a costly engineer callout.

With 24/7 monitoring via deep integration with most major boiler manufacturers, the tado° app will notify users when a problem is detected. This could be from an error code reported by your boiler, or when the Tado smart algorithms detect anything unusual.

If you can fix it yourself, it'll let you know exactly what you need to you do; or if not, who you should call.

Most of the time, this will involve resetting your heating system (the classic "turn it on and off again" fix). It'll also walk you through common maintenance tasks like bleeding the radiators to keep the pressure up. You'll also have the option to call for help if you get stuck.

Care and Protect is the third skill to be added to the Auto-Assist care package, along with Geofencing and Open Window Detection. Tado estimates users save an average €213/year (around $250) compared to non-smart heating systems.

Care and Protect will be available from October 2020 for all new and existing tado° customers, as an additional service on their Auto-Assist plan, which costs £25/year ($33), or £3/month. Even if your boiler doesn't have a digital connection, tado° claims it can use smart algorithms to identify problems based on data such as room temperature.

The Care and Protect feature was announced alongside a new Wireless Starter Kit and Temperature Sensor, for customers who don't have a hardwired connection between their thermostat and heating system. The temperature sensor allows for accurate readings even when the radiator is located behind a sofa or curtains.
