Twitter is launching an update that will provide additional context for trending topics in an effort to combat misinformation.
Users can currently check Twitter Trends to see which topics are most frequently being talked about on the micro-blogging site.
This lets anyone discover news and new interesting content and discussions.
However, why something is trending isn’t always clear and over 500,000 tweets have wondered just that: “Why is this hashtag trending?”
By adding pinned tweets and descriptions, Twitter hopes to make it clearer to users why something is trending.
Pinned tweets are curated by the app’s own team and its algorithm, and represent what a trending hashtag is all about.
In this way, spam and abusive tweets can also be filtered out.
What’s more, the team is adding descriptions to trends to add more context.
For now, the added descriptions and trends are being rolled out in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
