Health and fitness app installs were up 37% during peak-lockdown

Health and fitness apps peaked during coronavirus lockdowns – with downloads on iOS and Google Play up almost 6% during H1 2020 compared to the previous year.

These are the findings of a new report from Penthera and Apptopia.

Installs of health and fitness apps during May 2020 were up 37% compared to January 2020.

Driving the spike in downloads was the US where 64% of respondents said they spent more time in mobile fitness apps in 2020 compared to the year before.

Unsurprisingly, video-based workout apps were installed 65% more than non-video apps and saw 39% more daily active users. They also generated 15% more in revenues.

Video offers some distinct advantages according to the survey. Participants said they preferred it because it allowed them to go at their own pace, was more flexible and they could stick to a routine anywhere in the world.

Half of respondents also said they would subscribe to a fitness app if content was downloadable.

There’s plenty of optimism for sports app developers as a whopping 95% said they would continue to use health and fitness app post-COVID.
