Genshin Impact, the free-to-play action role-playing mobile game, is estimated to have made $245 million in player spending, according to data from Sensor Tower.
The game by miHoYo has quickly become a global hit and is touted as the biggest mobile release in the US at $45 million during its first 30 days on the market.
During its first week, the game generated $60 million in in-app spending and quickly became the biggest game in terms of revenue on the App Store and Google Play.
During its launch month, it outperformed games like Lineage 2: Revolution from Netmarble and Lineage M from NCSoft, and has also topped releases like Fire Emblem Heroes from Nintendo.
However Pokémon GO still outperformed the game at an estimated $283 million during the first month after release.
“Genshin Impact is a great example of how Chinese developers are succeeding in the West by focusing on high production values, popular gameplay mechanics, and deep progression systems,” said senior analyst Daniel Ahmad from Sensor Tower partner Niko Partners.
“The game feels and plays like a console game while ultimately being a free-to-play gacha title. Genshin Impact’s global success reflects the evolution of Chinese game development, from outsourced artwork 15 years ago to full game development for the domestic market more recently, and now to full game development that resonates with global markets as well as the home front.”
China represents the largest market for Genshin Impact at $82 million or 33.5% in revenue to date. Outside of China, Japan ranked second at 24% or $59 million.
The App Store accounted for 59% of total revenue while Google Play accounted for over 41%.
