Kahoot, the app that encourages people to make and share educational games, has acquired Drops, a language-learning start-up that uses puzzles and games to encourage users to learn.
Kahoot will pay $31 million in a cash deal plus $19 million in additional shares and cash so long as Drops meets its goals by 2022.
The deal follows Kahoot raising $215 million from SoftBank earlier this year.
The company plans to integrate Drops into its own platform.
So far, Drops has created three apps – First, Scripts and Droplets. All are aimed at users looking to learn new languages. First is a freemium app with some paid features that offers adults the chance to learn 42 languages.
Scripts is more focused on teaching reading and writing of languages while Droplets is designed for much younger learners.
The start-up now has more than 25 million users across its apps.
“We are thrilled to welcome Drops to the expanding Kahoot! family as we advance towards our vision to become the leading learning platform in the world,” said Eilert Hanoa, the CEO of Kahoot. “Drops’ offerings and innovative learning model are a perfect match to Kahoot!’s mission of making learning awesome through a simple, game-based approach. Drops and language learning becomes the latest addition to our growing offering of learning apps for learners of all ages and abilities. We will continue to expand in new areas to make Kahoot! the ultimate learning destination, at home, school or work, and to make learning awesome!”
According to Kahoot, language learning on apps is poised to be an $8 billion market by 2025. The company is backed by the likes of Disney and Microsoft and said it saw more than one billion players in the last year joining over 200 million Kahoot sessions.
