Food delivery apps had a good year in 2020 with usage rising around 25% in 2020 in the US alone. It comes as little surprise then that the industry is keeping its eyes open for new opportunities.
Now HungryPanda, the Chinese food delivery app that targets Mandarin-speaking customers outside of China, announced a funding round worth $70 million to drive its global expansion.
With over 50 million of Chinese people living outside of mainland China, not even considering multiple generations, HungryPanda targets customers who speak Mandarin.
The app is also solely focused on Chinese cuisine. It was founded by Eric Liu four years ago when he studied at the University of Nottingham in the UK and found it hard to order Chinese food from local restaurants.
With the majority of dishes on the UK restaurant menus altered to suit an English audience, he and his Chinese co-students found it hard to order traditional Chinese food.
That’s when he set out to build an app that could convey the same information but in Mandarin.
The app has since also expanded into grocery delivery because Chinese students faced similar challenges here.
HungryPanda is live across 47 cities in Australia, Canada, France, the UK and New Zealand. It’s been growing 30-fold since it launched and is already profitable.
The Series C funding round was led by Kinnevik with participation from 83North and Felix Capital.
