Twitter acquires video chat app Squad

Twitter says it has acquired video chat app Squad for an undisclosed sum. As part of the deal, the Squad team will be joining Twitter’s engineering, design and product departments.

However, the actual Squad app will be shutting down in light of the takeover.

Squad lets users share their screens on mobile and desktop while chatting on video, similar to Houseparty.

Usage of the app had rises 1100% during the COVID-19 lockdowns earlier this year.

It seems that Twitter plans to use the technology to incorporate into its own products.

It’s not entirely clear how the app aims to do that but adding the capability for Twitter users to instantly share and discuss tweets via video chat could prove useful for the social media network.

Twitter has previously tested tweets in other apps such as Snapchat Stories and Instagram.

In the future, the company could launch a more dedicated video tab and make live video streams a more prominent feature. Trends could then be discussed with friends in real time.
