Consumers spent $143 billion on mobile apps in 2020

Mobile adoption accelerated significantly in 2020 as more consumers used their smartphones to connect, learn and shop during the viral pandemic. Consumers spent a whopping $143 billion on mobile apps last year, a rise of 20% over 2019, according to the latest The State of Mobile 2021 report by App Annie.

Among the top markets driving this spend were China, United States, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

The report also found that time in-mobile was up 20% on Android compared to 2019 to 4.2 hours on average.

Mobile games are on track to surpass $120 billion in consumer spending in 2021, capturing 1.5x the overall market.

“In 2020, we were able to focus on executing mobile strategies that really delivered incremental growth for Deliveroo,” said James Cordery, Head of Performance Marketing Strategy, Deliveroo. “We were able to couple consumer insights with market context from App Annie to make decisions that have had a high impact on our performance.”

In the US, Gen Z, Millennials and Gen X/Baby Boomers spent 16%, 18% and 30% more time per user in their most-used apps.

Social networking apps saw usage jump 325% year-on-year with TikTok reaching 1.2 billion monthly active users.

In 2020, ad spending rose to $240 billion up by 26% from the previous year.

Meanwhile, funding continued to grow with $73 billion invested in mobile companies, an increase of 27% from 2019.
