Mobile users spent 30% more on apps in 2020

While the pandemic had negative effects on many industries, the app market wasn’t one of them.

According to data from Trading Platforms, mobile device users spent around $111 billion on apps from Apple and Google app stores, representing a 30% rise in spending.

As a growing number of consumers were forced to spend time indoors, more of them began to download apps to keep themselves occupied.

Apps also function as a gateway to stay in touch with loved ones, study or work more easily. It’s not all about entertainment after all.

The App Store generated 87.3% more spending than Google Play at $72.3 billion compared to $56 billion in 2019.

Google Play spending rose to $39 billion, up from $30 billion in 2019.

Notably, first time downloads of apps were higher than ever before on both stores – up 23.7% to 143 billion.

Google Play generated a higher number of first time downloads (27.9%) compared to Apple (12.1%).

Mobile games were the clear winners last year. Google saw some 46.1 billion game downloads compared to 10.1 billion on Apple.

Google Play’s download rate of games was 40% year-on-year compared to Apple’s 10% increase.

Among the top games overall were Among Us and Garena Free Fire.
