How to Reset Your Apple Music Recommendations

Apple Music used to possess an easily accessible way to re-curate your music recommendations by reselecting your favorite artists and music genres. Unfortunately, during an app update, Apple removed this method of refreshing your music curation.

Fear not, here is a guide on alternate methods to stop or reset your Apple Music auto-suggestions.

Apple Music Recommendations Explained

When you initially launch your Apple Music account for the first time, it asks you to select your favorites from a wide list of music genres and artists. This curation is how Apple Music will suggest playlists, albums, artists, and songs moving forward.

For instance, if you were to select Classic Rock, New Rock, and Foo Fighters as some of your favorite music choices, Apple Music would likely suggest very similar listening stations and will promote recently released rock music.

Changes to the app mean you are now only able to curate your music preferences during the initial account creation, you can't reset them at a later date—although Apple Music will continue to modify its suggestions based on your listening habits.

This is just one of several useful Apple Music features to use.

Don't be concerned, there are still a few ways you can reset your Apple Music curation by either disabling your Apple ID preferences or deleting and recreating your Apple Music account.

Both options have upsides and downsides, so let’s figure out which is the best option for you.

Turn Off Personalized Recommendations

Turning off Personalized Recommendations for your Apple ID is a good way to stop seeing any new suggestions moving forward.

Disabling this option won't remove your existing curation data, meaning the app will continue to build suggestions based on your usage. You just won't see them anymore. Shutting off Personalized Recommendations will also affect your recommendations in other Apple service apps, such as Apple Books.

Here's how to disable Personalized Recommendations on an iPhone:

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. Go to the Listen Now tab.
  3. Open your Apple Music profile by selecting the circular icon with a person's silhouette in the top-right corner of the screen. If you have previously uploaded an image as a personal profile picture, that will appear instead of the silhouette.
  4. Select View Apple ID which can be located by scrolling to the bottom of the Account page.
  5. Turn off Personalized Recommendations.
  6. Select Done in the top right corner, and you are finished.

After doing this, any new music searches, downloads, or playthroughs in Apple Music will no longer affect your auto-suggestions. This will not automatically delete your previous searches which means it may take a little while to notice the effects of this method.

Delete Your Apple Music Profile

If you require a complete Apple Music makeover with fresh music suggestions, the best option is deleting and recreating your Apple Music profile.

It's important to note that deleting your profile will completely remove your current music library. Creating a new profile will enable you to select all-new music and genre preferences, but it will also completely remove any previous Apple Music history.

If you're interested in a brand new Apple Music profile with newly selected favorites, follow these steps to make one:

  1. From the Listen Now tab, go to your Apple Music Account, and select View Profile.
  2. Select Edit in the center of the screen beneath your name.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Delete Profile. Be warned, this is a permanent deletion that will require an account reset.
  4. Set up a new Apple Music profile for yourself that is now free from your old selections. If you disabled Personalized Recommendations as described in the above section, you will no longer experience tailored music suggestions. Leaving Personalized Recommendations on will result in Apple Music suggesting music based on your new listening habits.
  5. Browse freely and enjoy a wide range of newly selected audio options.

Spotify's Recommendations Might Be Better

If you're still unhappy with Apple Music's recommendations even after creating a new profile, it might be time to switch music streaming platforms instead. Apple Music and Spotify have a lot of very similar features, but a lot of people feel that Spotify is far superior at suggesting new music.

Of course, there are lots of other factors to consider when choosing between Apple Music and Spotify as well.
