So, what's new in the Windows 10 cumulative update preview?

As ever, the cumulative update delivers the regular array of updates, bug fixes, and performance improvements. As this is an optional Windows 10 update—it's an update preview—you don't have to install this update yet. But it will eventually install automatically.

The highlights of this update include:

  • Updates an issue that displays unexpected screens during the Windows Out of Box Experience (OOBE).
  • Updates an issue in Advanced display settings that shows the incorrect refresh rates available for high dynamic range (HDR) displays.
  • Updates an issue that might cause video playback to flicker when rendering on certain low-latency capable monitors.
  • Updates an issue that sometimes prevents the input of strings into the Input Method Editor (IME).
  • Updates an issue that might sometimes prevent some keyboard keys from working, such as the home, Ctrl, or left arrow keys. This issue occurs when you set the Japanese IME input mode to Kana.
  • Updates an issue that displays the wrong language when you sign in to a console after changing the system locale.
  • Updates an issue with screen rendering after opening games with certain hardware configurations.
  • Displays the proper Envelope media type as a selectable output paper type for Universal Print queues.
  • Updates support for hole punch and stapling locations for print jobs with long edge first paper feed direction on certain printers.

If you do want to install this update:

  1. Hit Windows Key + I, then head to Update & Security > Check for updates.
  2. Now, select View optional updates.
  3. Select the KB4601382 update, then Download and install.
  4. Finally, select Restart now to complete the installation.

The official Microsoft Support page provides more details on the update.

Windows Updates Also Include Servicing Stack Updates

The Windows servicing stack is the component of the operating system that deals with Windows Update. As you might expect, the Windows servicing stack also requires updating from time-to-time, ensuring it functions properly and efficiently.

For a long while, servicing stack updates were released periodically, but they're now included with regular Windows 10 updates to streamline operations. The KB4601382 cumulative update also includes an update to the Windows 10 servicing stack, which should keep your Windows Updates nice and smooth.

As ever, installing the latest updates is important to keeping your computer safe and secure. As this is an optional update, you can wait a short period before installing to figure out if any issues arise for other users after installation.
