Solid State Logic Announces the UF8 DAW Controller

SSL released the Nucleus 2 control surface in 2016, a follow-up to its award-winning original Nucleus. Both controllers received generally favorable reviews, and it seems another one has just arrived.

Introducing the UF8 DAW Controller

On February 4, mixing console manufacturer Solid State Logic (SSL) has just released its newest DAW controller, the UF8.

It promises "absolute command of their workflow" and thus faster production speed of audio-based content for engineers, producers, and artists.

Packed into a six and a half pound metal enclosure, the SF8 is what SSL describes as "the culmination of SSL’s 40+ year legacy of mastering production workflows and studio ergonomics."

The UF8 offers high-spec touch sensitive faders and high-resolution color displays. Its eight endless rotary encoders give you access to eight tracks in your DAW of choice. Ableton, Pro Tools, and Logic are all compatible with the UF8. Some free DAW software works with it as well.

Other features of the UF8 include:

  • Ability to control between three DAWS simultaneously
  • Five banks of eight user keys and three quick keys (43 assignable keys total)
  • Intelligent multipurpose channel encoder
  • Mouse scroll emulation
  • Expandable up to four UF8s for a 32-channel SSL control surface
  • Full licenses of Vocalstrip 2 and Drumstrip plug-ins
  • Hi-Speed USB connectivity

In order to use the UF8, you have to download its command software: SSL 360° (available for free download for both Mac and Windows). Once installed, SSL 360° allows you to configure your UF8 unit(s), customize the user keys, save and load profiles, and manage updates.

“The layout and build quality are all about our fixation with human engineering, creating products that keep you in the creative zone with high-speed access to every fader or control, without operator fatigue or discomfort," Studio Product Manager Andy Jackson told TV Tech.

SSL is a studio brand that's more well-known for producing some of the best analog gear available, but the new UF8 could signify the company crossing over into the digital realm.

Is the UF8 the Controller for You?

The UF8 is a powerful and versatile control surface that works with most popular DAWs, but you might be disappointed to find that it doesn't have a master fader or proper transport control. Whether or not it's worth its $1,299 price tag is up to you.

However, it's exciting to see SSL expand its brand—first with its audio interface, and now a DAW controller. Will we eventually see SSL create its own DAW, too?
