After a year of losses, travel apps are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
With some 44% of Americans now fully vaccinated, travel app installs have noted increases of 123% in May 2021 to 24.7 million, which is roughly double the number from last year.
SensorTower expects that installs of apps in the category will hit around 124.7 million during the first half of 2021, up 35% from the same period in 2020.
Installs plummeted 36% during the first half of 2020 due to pandemic-related lockdowns that meant people weren’t able to travel.
However, the app category is still recovering, which installs in H1 2021 predicted to reach adoption rates of 86% of those in 2019.
Airlines saw the most notable growth compared to 2020, with leading apps climbing to 2.6 million installs in May 2021, up 311% from May 2020.
The top five airline apps (American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, United and Spirit) are estimated to generate 12.8 million downloads, up 64%.
Meanwhile, booking apps like Expedia and Hotes.com saw US installs grow 300% last month.
Vacation rental apps are also noticing an upswing with adoption 38% up over last year. Top hotel brands in the US expect 4.6 million downloads for the first half of the year.
