Rohlik, the Czech grocery delivery app start-up, just secured €100 million in a Series C funding round that values the company at €1 billion.
The round was led by Index Ventures which previously invested in the company as part its Series B round three months ago.
Rohlik plans to use the funding to expand into other European countries such as Germany, France and Spain.
It’s a great time for food delivery apps with restaurant and delivery apps continuing to grow despite the end of the pandemic.
Installs of these apps were up 21% in 2020 to 1.7 billion as customers were under orders to dine at home.
The pandemic has arguably had a lasting impact on how we consume foods and shop for our favourite items.
Technology companies are taking note and continue to expand and improve their services as demand has gone through the roof.
Rohlik is already profitable in the Czech Republic where it has been operational for six years. It provides a range of its own goods and partners with local businesses on others. What’s different about Rohlik is that it can drive orders to smaller local retailers such as fishmongers or local bakeries.
Its revenues reached €300 million in 2020 with over 750,000 customers.
In Germany, the company is launching a platform called Knuspr.de.
It remains to be seen how far consumer habits will shift over the coming years, but food delivery has proven time-saving and convenient which means it’s likely to stay.
