Travel apps in the US have surged following the lifting of lockdown restrictions in the country.
According to new data from Sensor Tower, first-time installs of travel apps on the App Store rose to 61 million and 24 million on Google Play during Q2 2021.
This follows a decline of 56% during Q2 2020 and highlights the recovery of the industry as a whole as lockdowns have lifted.
Overall, quarterly downloads of travel apps are 1% higher compared to Q2 2019.
Hopper, Booking.com and Travelocity were the top travel apps in terms of downloads – rising 81% compared to 2019.
They accounted for 27% of all downloads in the travel app sphere.
While Skyscanner download dropped 78% during the COVID year, they’ve recovered by 69% during Q2 2021.
Ride sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft have also recovered, while e-bike sharing apps such as Bird and Lime are growing rapidly in 2021.
In July 2021, downloads for Bird reached 630k – marking a 121% rise year-on-year, while Lime rose 570k for downloads.
