YouTube looking to expand app subscription partnerships

YouTube may be adding a channel store for streaming services to its app, competing with Amazon, Roku and Apple.

This would mean that users could be adding subscriptions to other streaming services to their package. Right now, YouTube already offers users access to added services like HBO Max.

Sources familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that the company is discussing such an option with entertainment companies.

It’s not entirely clear what YouTube’s cut would be, but the move to become a middle man between streamers and subscribers makes sense.

YouTube Plus now has some 2 billion viewers each month. That’s some serious leverage to negotiate terms with streaming platforms looking to reach app subscribers.

But YouTube isn’t alone in making the move toward a wider marketplace. Companies such as Roku and Walmart have also announced partnerships with groups like Paramount+.
