Netflix to Acquire Next Games by Q2 2022

Netflix to Acquire Next Games by Q2 2022

Next Games Netflix

'Developers being acquired' is a phrase that’s being seen much more often as of late. Several studios have been bought out over the course of the past two months, and the trend looks to continue. That’s because today, Next Games is being acquired by streaming giant Netflix for close to €65 million.

Next Games was founded in 2013, and is led by Teemu Huuhtanen. They’re a mobile games developer that has credits like Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales, The Walking Dead: Our World, and The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land. At the end of 2020, the game developer has reportedly logged €27.2 million, and 95% of that is generated from the brand’s in-game purchases.

Netflix vice president of games Michael Verdu said the following regarding this acquisition:

Next Games has a seasoned management team, strong track record with mobile games based on entertainment franchises, and solid operational capabilities. We are excited for them to join Netflix as a core studio in a strategic region and key talent market, expanding our internal game studio capabilities. While we’re just getting started in games, I am confident that together we will be able to build a portfolio of world-class games that will delight our members around the world.

It seems like a logical move to go in this direction, seeing as how Netflix is making strides to go into the gaming industry. This also goes on record to show that they aren’t trying to go on an “acquisition spree”, according to a Q3 2021 earnings call.

Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen had some choice words for the pairing as well, saying:

We have had an unwavering focus to execute on our vision: to become the partner of choice for global entertainment businesses and craft authentic and long-lasting interactive entertainment based on the world’s most beloved franchises. Joining forces with the world’s largest streaming service, Netflix, presents an opportunity for a logical and exciting continuation of our strategy to craft interactive experiences for the world to enjoy.

Our close collaboration with Netflix on Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales has already proven that together we create a strong partnership. This is a unique opportunity to level-up the studio on all fronts and continue on our mission together.

What Netflix plans to do with this team going forward, aside from “world-class games” is unknown, but we’ll update when more information comes out.

Epic Buys Music Site Bandcamp, Which Will Remain an Independent “Standalone Marketplace”

Epic Buys Music Site Bandcamp, Which Will Remain an Independent “Standalone Marketplace”

Epic Games Bandcamp

Epic Games has announced they’re expanding beyond games into the realm of music with the acquisition of Bandcamp. For those unfamiliar, Bandcamp is a music-hosting site and marketplace popular amongst indie musicians. For their part, Bandcamp says they won’t be changing their tune (pun intended), but plan to expand internationally and improve their tech with Epic’s backing.

Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community. […] The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.

Epic, on the other hand, is a bit more cagey about what they’re getting out of the Bandcamp acquisition, simply saying this is part of their goal to “support creators across all media.”

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the Bandcamp team to Epic Games. Bandcamp has built an incredible community and business where up and coming artists can succeed thanks to the direct support of their fans, with one of the best revenue models and terms in music. This aligns closely with Epic’s approach to supporting creators across all media and enabling them to connect directly with their fans.

That’s a nice statement from Epic, but there’s probably more to this acquisition than they let on. Epic has already dipped their toes into music, with live performances in Fortnite and the acquisition of Rock Band developer Harmonix. You can definitely see how Bandcamp could bolster those efforts. There may also be a chance this is a part of Epic’s bitter feud with Apple, as perhaps they plan to grow Bandcamp into an iTunes competitor.

What do you think about this deal? Does it change how you think about Bandcamp? How do you think Epic may use their acquisition in the future?

VESA launches DP40 & DP80 UHBR cable certification for DisplayPort 2.0 standard

VESA launches DP40 & DP80 UHBR cable certification for DisplayPort 2.0 standard

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) reveals its new certification program for the video source, display, and cable products supporting DisplayPort UHBR (Ultra-high Bit Rate), the higher data link rates endorsed by the DisplayPort standard version 2.0. The higher bandwidths allowed by UHBR support an assortment of use topics such as uncompressed 8K 60Hz HDR, 4K 240Hz HDR, two 4K 120Hz HDR, or four 4K 60Hz HDR displays through an individual cable. Through the DisplayPort UHBR Certification Program, device and cable manufacturers can ship new products to DisplayPort authorized test centers (ATCs) for testing and certification.

VESA Certified DisplayPort UHBR products are ensured to sustain the higher bit rates advocated by DisplayPort version 2.0 standards

VESA also introduced VESA certified DP40 and DP80 UHBR cables, which assure display connectivity and operation at the most elevated implementation levels presented with DisplayPort 2.0. VESA certified DP40 cables must endow up to the UHBR10 link rate (10 Gigabits per second or Gbps) determined by DisplayPort 2.0, and support the complete four-lane operation, delivering a total throughput of 40 Gbps. VESA certified DP80 cables must support up to the UHBR20 link rate (20 Gbps) specified by DisplayPort 2.0, with four lanes, supplying a maximum throughput of 80 Gbps. VESA certified DP80 cables would also support the UHBR13.5 link rate (13.5 Gbps), also represented by DisplayPort 2.0.

Multiple video source and display devices are currently experiencing testing in the DisplayPort UHBR Certification Program and should finish early certification very soon. Numerous DP40 and DP80 cables using enhanced full-sized DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort connectors have passed certification and are in manufacturing. Vendors presently offering VESA certified DP40 and DP80 cables include Accell, BizLink, and WIZEN, with additional cables experiencing certification and anticipated to reach the market shortly.

The ultra high bit rates supported with the DisplayPort 2.0 specification bring a whole new level of display performance and experience to the consumer. By establishing the UHBR Certification Program, we hope to speed adoption of higher-performance video and display products across the ecosystem. We expect results from this program to be similar to the success achieved with other VESA certification programs, including those that have enabled widespread ecosystem adoption of products supporting DisplayPort HBR3 bit rates, as well as the DisplayPort Alt Mode and DisplayHDR specifications and standards.

No matter how high the performance of your graphics card and monitor are, the resulting image quality can still be limited by the cable used to connect those devices. Thanks to improvements in both the DisplayPort connector and cable design, the new VESA certified DP40 and DP80 UHBR cables enable consumers to get the highest performance possible from their VESA certified devices. These new cables are backed by VESA’s UHBR Certification Program, which provides added assurance that if your cable has the DP40 or DP80 logo from VESA, it will meet the specs for the highest data rates supported by current and future products certified by VESA.

James Choate, compliance program manager, VESA

DP40 and DP80 cables are available in full-size and Mini DisplayPort cable configurations. They are backward compatible with products sponsoring DisplayPort link rates formerly described and now in use, including RBR (Reduced Bit Rate), HBR (High Bit Rate), HBR2, and HBR3. For DisplayPort Alt Mode (DisplayPort over the USB Type-C connector), passive USB-C cables endorse UHBR bit rate speeds. In contrast, USB Type-C to DisplayPort converter cables certified by VESA to complete UHBR speed requirements will soon be available.

UHBR device testing is currently available at DisplayPort ATCs, such as Allion Labs and Granite River Labs (GRL). Users can find a complete list of DisplayPort ATCs at https://www.vesa.org/displayport-developer/compliance/.

Capcom Angers Fighting Game Community with New Licensing Structure Policy

Capcom Angers Fighting Game Community with New Licensing Structure Policy

Capcom Street Fighter

Fighting game tournaments have such a strange tendency to draw players, moments that are worth highlight reels, and controversy. Street Fighter V is no different, as its launch was, frankly, the stuff of nightmares, but it’s become so much better now. Capcom, for whatever reason, doesn’t seem to agree with tournament organizers.

Tournaments are already having it rough thanks to COVID-19 greatly limiting the ability to gather and do these things in person. Capcom’s already had to cancel their live finale for the 2021 Capcom Pro Tour Season, and opt for an online exhibition to substitute. And what does Capcom do as tournaments are already suffering? Release a new set of rules which harm tournament organizers hosting Street Fighter games.

And this set of guidelines is already just…Terrible. Obviously, you’ll have to apply for a license to host the game, but Capcom has several strange rules for it. One of the biggest highlights is that you can’t have a yearly prize pool exceeding $10,000.

That low of an amount makes other scenes like DOTA and Overwatch look way bigger than anything Street Fighter can offer… Well, more than they already do. The ruling even goes further, saying that you aren’t allowed to have more than $2,000 in prize pools for a single event. Even then, their sponsorship bonuses rule says you also cannot exceed $5,000 and $20,000 for a single event and yearly, respectively.

This is likely done to keep prize pools low during official events while at the same time preventing the supposed smaller tournaments from dishing out prize pools that are higher than those events found in places like the Capcom Pro Tour.

In their article on the subject, DPG at Law offers some insight regarding this reasoning:

Capcom will be gaining the rights to use community event photos, videos, and stream footage for its own marketing and potentially other marketing material, major licensing fees, and other benefits from bigger events.

Other highlights include prohibiting television or cable broadcasts, as if the ESPN deal from 2016 and 17 went south (and frankly, good riddance), and even getting into manipulating what you can verbally say while advertising your event(s). To quote them directly:

You cannot promote Your Event in a way that suggests that Your Event is endorsed by or affiliated with Capcom or our licensors in any manner. You cannot use Capcom’s company logos or trademarks (e.g., CAPCOM) to promote your Event. Furthermore, you must include the following statement in a prominent place on Your Event website and other key marketing materials:

“This event is not affiliated with or sponsored by Capcom.

Do not incorporate Street Fighter intellectual property, the Street Fighter name, or the Street Fighter logo into Your Event name or visual advertising. For example: Do not say “Your Brand Street Fighter Event.” Rather, say “Your Brand Event. Featuring Street Fighter.

So, you not only have to get approval from the developers themselves, but you ALSO have to go and abide by prize pool rules, cannot have affiliation with them, and can’t broadcast it aside from through Twitch, presumably. Otherwise, obvious things are their lawyers not being responsible for mess-ups relating to events, no modifications are to be broadcasted, and talking about how your event uses their logos.

This probably won’t go over well with the community as it is, because it’s essentially screwing up the process to even get a game featured at your event, but now Capcom is out here making it intentionally much harder to do anything relating to Street Fighter as a series.

Tournament Organizer and FGC Commentator Josh "Icege" McWorther told the following to Wccftech:

I can understand Capcom's desire to collect as much on the sponsorship dollars out there as possible themselves as well as wanting to exert to control over their IP, but at what cost? Is this out of malice towards the fandom that has kept [Capcom's] IPs relevant or is it just pure incompetence on the part of Capcom leadership? How does the restriction on sponsorships and prize pools help the players? [...] There are so many questions with so few, if any, acceptable answers.

After a few hours of backlash, Capcom posted an update that.. Didn't really say much except that they are evaluating their current policies.

This, of course, also isn't sitting well with the Fighting Game Community tournament organizers and members. While some understand the fact that there are several measures that need to be taken to quicken the approval process for tournaments, there are other issues that Capcom doesn't address with this very statement.

Some questions posed by members of the FGC include:

  1. How can these measures help smaller grassroots FGC tournaments?
  2. How does this help local tournaments try to promote themselves?
  3. How does this create a stronger locals-to-majors pipeline?
  4. Will the "Safe Spaces" rule be applicable toward any current malefactors?

What adds fuel to the fire is that comparatively, the KOF XV scene has also shown SNK's willingness to work with FGC members to help promote their game. SNK has helped several tournament organizers with prize pool additions and sponsorships through their eSports Support Program. The only conditions to meet are that the tournament has to exceed 16 people and for tournament organizers to adhere to all applicable laws while managing their tournaments appropriately.

Street Fighter V is available now on PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam.

Disable Quick Note Feature in macOS Monterey [Tutorial]

Disable Quick Note Feature in macOS Monterey [Tutorial]

Learn to disable Quick Note in macOS Monterey

You can disable the Quick Note feature on your Mac if you're running macOS Monterey. Here's how you do it in a few easy steps.

Tired of Quick Note Accidentally Launching on Your Mac? You can Disable the Feature Right Now

Apple brought Quick Note feature to the Mac with macOS Monterey. The way it works is absolutely simple. Just take your mouse pointer to the bottom right corner of the display and you will see a small instance of the Notes app pop right up, allowing you to instantly jot down a brand new idea. It's always there and ready whenever you need it.

While this feature is great and all, it can become potentially annoying when you accidentally launch Quick Note over and over again in everyday use. Thankfully, you can disable Quick Note completely. But it's not as straightforward as you might think. You cannot just launch the Notes app and disable this feature from there. Notes literally doesn't have a Quick Note enable or disable toggle switch which puzzles us to this day. However, we will show you how you can disable this feature in a few easy steps.

Tutorial

Step 1. Launch System Preferences in macOS Monterey.

Step 2. Now click on Mission Control. Bet you didn't see this one coming at all.

Step 3. Click on Hot Corners on the bottom left hand corner.

Step 4. Click on the Quick Note option and disable it as shown in the screenshot below. If you like to move Quick Notes to some other corner, you can do that as well from here.

Once disabled, you can bump your mouse pointer in any corner of the display and Quick Note won't show itself ever again. If you do want to create a new note, just launch the Notes up like a regular human from now on. You can always reverse the change whenever you like.

In my workflow, having Quick Note around is extremely handy. I can simply bring it up to create lists, write down ideas as they strike and more. Again, your mileage may vary and this feature might be absolutely useless for you.

If you haven't ever tried Quick Note on your Mac, simply take your mouse pointer to the bottom right corner of the display and take the feature for a spin. Who knows you might end up liking it more than anything Apple has tossed in macOS Monterey!
