WhatsApp is currently testing a feature that is meant to help users stop the spread of misinformation by allowing them to check if forwarded messages are valid.
When a message is forwarded, users can now employ the ‘Search the Web’ function to automatically find similar results and news stories online.
The forwarded message is verified against credible news sources.
When users get sent a message from people who are not close contacts, they’ll be marked by two arrows.
But WhatsApp says it sets a limit on sharing messages multiple times to avoid spamming.
In a blog post, the company said:
“Today, we’re piloting a simple way to double check these messages by tapping a magnifying glass button in the chat. Providing a simple way to search messages that have been forwarded many times may help people find news results or other sources of information about content they have received.”
The new feature will be rolled out in Brazil, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, UK, and US for starters. It is available for iOS, Android and the WhatsApp web version.
