Mobile game downloads rose 15% during Q3 2020 to one billion compared to the same period the previous year.
The latest Q3 Index by App Annie, the mobile data and analytics platform, shows that a growing number of consumers turned to mobile games to stay entertained during COVID-19 lockdowns.
What’s more, the company estimates that consumer spending on mobile gaming will be 2.8x that of desktops and 3.1x higher than consoles.
On iOS, consumers downloaded more than 2.6 billion games during the third quarter of the year while Google Play downloads rose 20% to 11 billion.
On Google Play, games accounted for a higher share of overall downloads (45%) compared to iOS (30%).
Hyper-casual, puzzle and simulation games were the most downloaded during the quarter.
In the UK alone, games on both app stores amounted to around 232 million downloads.
But consumers weren’t just downloading more; they also spent more money in-app. Spending was up 5% from Q2 to Q3 2020 with core gamers leading the boost.
Both Pokemon GO and Rise of Kingdoms dominated the charts for consumers spend. Pokemon GO is still the most downloaded game worldwide.
Among Us! was the second most-downloaded game. App Annie attributes this to gaming platforms such as Twitch that are seeing an increasing number of gamers sign up.
