How Do You Change or Reset a Spotify Password? | MakeUseOf

Like any of your other online accounts, you certainly don't want your Spotify profile to get hacked. Whether you suspect someone has broken into your account or just want to refresh your password to make it stronger, changing your Spotify password is easy.

Let's look at how to change a Spotify password, as well as resetting it if needed.

How to Change Your Spotify Password

To change the password for your Spotify account, you need to visit Spotify's site in your browser. You can't change your password in Spotify's desktop or mobile apps.

Visit Spotify's accounts page to get started. You can easily launch this page by clicking your profile icon at the top-right of the Spotify app and choosing Account.

What you see here will depend on how you created your Spotify account. If you created it with your email address and a unique password, you'll see a Change password tab on the left sidebar. Click this to change your Spotify password—you'll need to enter your current password and a new one, as usual.

We recommend using a password manager to create and save a strong password that you don't have to remember. That way, your account has stronger protection.

Changing Your Spotify Password If You Use Facebook

If you created your Spotify account using Facebook (which was required when Spotify was new), you won't see an option to change your password on the Spotify account page. Because you sign in through Facebook, you'll need to change your Facebook password to effectively change the password you use for Spotify.

In case you've lost access to the Facebook account you used for Spotify, find out how to recover your Facebook account so you can get back in.

How to Use Spotify Device Passwords

If your Spotify account was set up through Facebook, you'll see a tab called Set device password on your Spotify account page. This allows you to choose a separate password that's required to use Spotify on other devices, like streaming systems and game consoles.

On this tab, click Send email to set password and you'll get an email at the address associated with your account. Follow this to set a password you can use to sign into Spotify on devices that don't support Facebook login.

Along with this password, you'll require the username Spotify provides on this page in order to log in. In most cases, for people who signed up with Facebook, this username will be a random string of numbers. It's thus a good idea to save your username in a password manager so you don't have to memorize it.

This password works with more than just devices that can't log in with Facebook. If you want, you can use that username and password combination to log into Spotify in your browser and other locations, too.

However, you shouldn't deactivate your Facebook account if you used it to sign up for Spotify. Spotify doesn't offer an official solution for removing your Facebook account in these cases, aside from deleting your Spotify account and opening a new one with another email address.

How to Reset Your Spotify Password

Above, we've looked at what to do if you know your Spotify password and just want to change it. However, Spotify also has a tool to reset your password if you don't remember it.

Head to Spotify's password reset page for help. Enter your username, or the email address associated with your account, and Spotify will send you an email with instructions to set a new password.

Spotify's Password Options, Explained

That's all you need to know about resetting your Spotify password. Unfortunately, Spotify doesn't yet offer any additional security options, such as two-factor authentication (2FA). This means you're limited to the strength of your password (or Facebook's 2FA, if you use that to sign in).

Now that your account is secure, you can get back to enjoying great music on Spotify.
