Consumer spending on gaming apps skyrockets to $100 billion

Consumers spent $143 billion on apps and $100 of that on gaming apps in 2020.

According to new research from App Annie shared via email, gaming dominated revenues for downloads. Games represented 36% of all mobile app downloads last year or 80 billion out of 218 billion total downloads.

Users spent 35% more time playing games because of lockdowns.

And there’s not much of a slowdown anticipated for 2021 when App Annie predicts that users will spend $120 billion on mobile games.

Advertising was one of the top ways to monetise mobile gaming apps in 2020 despite weaker demand for mobile ads overall.

Fullscreen and rewarded ads contributed 80% of game revenues across the MoPub Exchange. User engagement reached some of the highest levels for impressions per daily active users – up 51%.

The latest data also shows that casual games led the way for downloads, comprising 78% of all game downloads, compared to 20% for core games and 2% fo casino.

Core gamers generated 66% of total revenue which accounted for just a fifth of downloads.

One of the top games of the year was Among Us, which hit the top spot in the gaming charts for casual games and ranked third for monthly active users.

It had amassed some 295 million monthly active users by October 2020.

Among the core games, Honour of Kings led the charts and Pokemon GO had another solid year.
