In 2020, hyper casual games accounted for 31% of downloads of mobile games. That’s a significant jump up from the 17% it had in 2017 and pandemic lockdowns are the most likely drivers for the quicker adoption.
According to new research from Sensor Tower, game genres that saw rapid growth included Arcade and Puzzle games, which increased 33% and 78%, respectively, last year.
Among the top games in these categories were Subway Surfers and Sybo Games as well as AmongUs and InnerSloth.
When it comes to revenues, it’s RPG and Strategy games that accounted for a combined 50% share of mobile game revenues in 2020.
Games like Genshin Impact and miHoYo generated around $560 million in revenues last year.
Meanwhile, Casino and Shooter titles saw spending climb 10% and 9%, respectively. Notable titles included Coin Master and Moon Active.
The new study also shows that fashion themes are featuring more heavily in games these days with Project Makeover and Super Stylist rising to the top 100 titles for downloads.
The fashion theme is expected to grow in popularity this year. By Q4 2020, games in that genre had generated 280 million downloads.
