WhatsApp has long allowed you to make both voice and video calls from its mobile app. Starting today, you'll be able to place these calls using WhatsApp for desktop as well. These calls come with end-to-end encryption to ensure your conversations remain private.
Everything You Need to Know About WhatsApp Desktop Calls
You've been able to make both voice and video calls using the WhatsApp app on both your iOS and Android phones. WhatsApp for desktop lacked this feature since the beginning, and users had to reach for their phone to receive and make calls via this app.
With this new change in the desktop app, you can now call your contacts right from the WhatsApp for Windows or Mac app on your computer. You don't need to install any add-ons or anything like that to use this feature; the feature is built right into the app itself.

WhatsApp actually brought this feature for some users late last year, however, it wasn't available for the mass public. This is no longer the case and now everyone has access to this feature.
For now, the app only lets you place calls with one person at a time. Group calls aren't available yet, however, WhatsApp has said it'll be bringing this feature very soon.
Devices You Can Use This Feature On
Since WhatsApp is available as a native app for both Windows and macOS, you can use the calling feature on both these platforms. You just need to make sure you're running the required operating system version to use this feature.
Windows users need to be running Windows 10 64-bit version 1903, while macOS users must be on macOS 10.13 or later.
If you aren't running the required versions, update the OS version on your computers. On Windows, head into Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to find and install newer updates.
On macOS, click the Apple logo in the top-left, select About This Mac, and then click Software Update to update your software version.
How to Use Voice and Video Calling in WhatsApp for Desktop
To make calls from your desktop via WhatsApp, you must have the WhatsApp app for Windows or Mac installed on your computer. You should also have logged in to your WhatsApp account by scanning the QR code on your desktop using your phone app.
Then, you can simply select the contact you want to call, click the call option, and your call is placed.
Make WhatsApp Calls Without Reaching for Your Phone
With this new feature, you no longer need to access your Android or iOS smartphone to make WhatsApp calls. You can place your calls from within the WhatsApp app on your computer.
