Acer Pledges to Using 100% Renewable Energy by 2035

The Acer Group has announced its commitment to switch to 100% renewable energy use by 2035.  The company also announced its Earthion platform under which it will create products and packaging in a more sustainable manner.

Acer's Long-Term Commitment to Using Renewable Energy

In a press release on the Acer Press Room, the company highlights its efforts to improve energy efficiency. These began in 2008, when the company "adopted the CDP’s global disclosure system to manage the environmental impacts of its supply chain."

In fact, by 2020, Acer had reduced its carbon emissions by 60%.

As part of its pledge to use only renewable energy by 2035, Acer has joined RE100, a group of corporations focused on climate action and reducing the impact of global warming. All organizations in RE100 have similar climate goals.

Sam Kimmins, the Head of RE100, said:

I am delighted to welcome Acer to RE100. By committing to 100% renewable electricity by 2035, Acer joins over 300 of the world’s leading businesses committed to driving market change. This sends a powerful message that renewable electricity makes good business sense, and we encourage others to follow.

Acer has launched its Earthion mission to tackle environmental challenges by increasing sustainability when it comes to product design, logistics, and supply chain partners. Essentially, Earthion is a collaborative and integrated effort by Acer and its partners to create a positive impact on the environment.

Under Earthion, Acer's focus is on six main areas—Energy, Product Design, Packaging Design, Production, Logistics, and Recycling.

As such, the company used recycled paper for packaging in all its laptops in 2020. Acer claims this "saved 8,750 kg of paper pulp and cut down on the usage of 20 million plastic bags."

In addition to this, Acer recycled over 50 metric tonnes of batteries that were later reused.

The Acer Aspire Vero Is the First Product Under Earthion

During the recent Next @ Acer event where the company announced the world's first 17-inch Chromebook, the company also announced a sustainability focused laptop—the Acer Aspire Vero.

The company has used an eco-friendly design and manufacturing process in the new laptop. Notably, the company has used 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic on the keyboard caps, and 30% PCR in other surfaces on the laptop.

Additionally, Acer decided to go with eco-friendly packaging and consequently, the box is made of 80-85% recycled paper pulp. The plastic protection for the adapter has been replaced with a paper sleeve while the laptop bag and the protection film between the keyboard and screen has been made with 100% recycled industrial plastic.
