Disney+ the popular streaming app just surpassed $2 billion in lifetime global consumer spending across app stores, according to new data released by App Annie.
This means Disney+ will join a handful of mobile apps – 35 to be exact – that have crossed the $2 billion mark.
Mobile games represent 26 of the 35 while only nine non-gaming apps have achieved this spending goal.
Netflix, YouTube, Tencent Video, and iQIYI are the other streaming apps that all surpassed $2 billion in spending previously.
The US was the largest market for Disney+, followed by the UK.
Part of the reason why the app has been so successful is its focus on exclusive content.
In 2021, downloads spiked 40% for 30 days after it released “Luca”.
The company has focused on exclusive streaming releases alongside theatrical ones that require one-off payments or subscriptions.
The pandemic further bolstered downloads as more users chose to stream from the comfort and safety of their homes. Consumers spend 4.2 hours each on their mobile devices in 2021 compared to watching 3.1 hours of TV.
