Snap has just acquired Paris-based neurotechnology group NextMind in an effort to boost its augmented reality research efforts.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
According to the Snapchat maker, NextMind is joining the company to bolster its augmented reality (AR) expansion but the team will continue to operate out of Paris.
Snap Lab is the company’s hardware team that’s behind Spectacles.
The team is now shifting focus to advanced technologies such as AR to explore the future of Snap Camera and Spectacles.
NextMind previously developed non-invasive brain computer interface technologies to make hands-free interactions with electronic devices such as computers and AR/VR wearables and headsets easier.
The technology monitors neutral activity to understand user intent when interacting with a computer interface.
Perhaps reassuringly, it does not “read” thoughts or send brain signals.
