Mobile gamers spent 16% more on sports games in the US over the last 12 months according to new data from Sensor Tower.
Players spent a total of $648.8 million with top games such as Golf Clash from Playdemic attracting around $132.8 million in spending alone.
COVID-19 lockdowns meant that gamers were looking for opportunities to spend their time at home and this drove interest in mobile sports games.
Other top games were 8 Ball pool and Fishing Clash.
In terms of downloads, the sports genre saw installs jump to 129.3 million – up 16.3% compared to the previous year.
8 Ball Pool saw some of the highest installs at 9.4 million downloads, followed by Madden NFL 2 Mobile and Basketball Arena.
The realistic sports genre was the top driver of revenues in the sports category with player spend up 11.4%. It was also the top genre for downloads – up 17.8% to 3.7 million.
For revenue per install, Arcade sports games led with $5.10 in spending per download.
