Consumers spent 86% more time in travel apps this year than they had the previous year, according to new data share via email by App Annie.
While vaccinations are driving the reopening of the travel industry, it seems we are still far below levels of 2019.
Google Maps was the most downloaded travel and navigation app during Q1 2021 as more consumers venture out on local trips.
It was followed by Uber which ranked second for downloads by number one for average monthly users.
At the same time, travel booking apps such as Booking.com are making a comeback, scoring spot 7 in the worldwide download charts.
AirBnB ranked ninth for worldwide download.
Globally, the time spent in travel and navigation apps was up 86% year-on-year, to level out pre-pandemic levels.
“After being in lockdown for more than a year, people across the world are looking to make up for lost time when it comes to their travel goals. Some are focused on local trips they can get to by car, as Google Maps was the most downloaded travel and navigation app worldwide in Q1,” said Lexi Sydow, Head of Marketing Insights, App Annie.
“In certain countries, like the US, where travel restrictions loosened quickly as vaccinations rose, apps like American Airlines, Fly Delta and Southwest Airlines ranked in the top 20 for downloads and average MAU when looking at travel and navigation apps. We can expect to see travel app usage and downloads continue to spike as things get back to normal.”
The latest data update also showed the in July 14.7 million people used the COVID-19 app by the NHS in the UK compared to 14.4 million in late June.
